My dad was a radio operator in the army and I grew up around ham radio and CB sets. I remember listening to truckers on ch19. They were definitely more popular on 80s and 90s. Seemed to phase out in East Anglia where I grew up.

Midland used to make a set you could use as a handheld or plug it into aux socket in your vehicle. Very good sets.

As I remember you had to pay a licensing fee to dti once a year for your address and you were covered for use in your vehicle. Don’t know if they ever phased the licensing out.

Sorry it seems vague. Hope it helps a little. And I’m sure someone more knowledgable will be along soon to put me right lol

The licence fee has been phased out for some time now. I occasionally take my rig to work and as I use a different truck every day I use this;
thunderpole.co.uk/intek-mag-1345.html Very convenient. :wink:

I remember my pops having one of these in the eighties in his lorry , wondered what you guys thought is it worth having one of these in my lorry for up to date traffic or if needed help while im out , being a female driver just wondered how they can be used to help me on the road and also as drive many different lorries wether you can can get a handheld (portable one) so can take with me from lorry to lorry , also just to have a bit of fun with too as I remember my dad talking to his mates whilst in the cab

or are these toys just a thing of the past ?

I think they are coming back a bit now, I have one and in some areas it’s non stop, whilst in others it’s silence, they are very handy to find out how many are waiting in ports/farms etc in front of you, or to warn of heavy traffic etc.
