can anyone tell me if it is iligal to use a side band radio in the uk, fitted to a truck running abroad and uk.
Side band is not legal for UK use on CB or freeband frequencies at the moment.
There is talk of opening up the midband, old AM, frequencies to both AM and sideband to bring us into line with other European countries but no fixed dates as far as I know.
If however you hold an Amateur radio licence then sideband is useable within the defined amateur bands as far as I know.

Did CBs used to be big over here in trucks? Or is that just really an American thing?
hi kevwall, you are right in what you are thinking about cb radio’s they were very big in this country as well as the statesBU,in 1969 i bought my first cb in milan,it was a PACE40 channel am radio working of a dv27 antenna tuned in at 1 to 1 swr,i then brought some more back with me each trip until i had half of salisbury on the cb, it then esculated to such an exstent that i was able to sell them in the uk and give up driving for a while, but alas all good things come to an end.but i do live in hope that am plus sideband will eventually become legal in the uk,but it realy must be monitored the same as with radio hams,i think that an exam sould be sat 1paper on operation and 2 paper on radio procidure and the Q code then and only then should a license with a loged call sign be issued.

It’s very big thing in Germany and East from there. In Poland for example even many cars who travel often on long distance have them fitted. Much better than Sally Traffic, as it gives speed traps away as well
I remember when I was in Germany we all had them cb in the cars and trucks.
Long hours of talking, meeting with others, meet up for convoy driving even in cars on the weekends.
It was great fun.
Missing it sometimes.
All it is today is mobile phones and everybody is sitting at home, bored ■■■■■■■■ and using bloody Facebook.
I would love if cb comes back to standart use.
And it’s lot cheaper then mobiles.
As many people have to thing about there spending thanks to our ■■■■ government it key come back - let’s hope so.
Loads more fun.
And it was more informative for drivers as radio 1 or. Bbc2.
Me - aim up for it.
Found yesterday my old 40fm in the shed and actually put it back in my v70 to see how much people actually using it, then may is worth getting awe meter a fixed arial and other oys to it.
As driving to Manchester from derby in a bit even on Easter Monday may a good test.

This is still the case in Poland and other countries… If I will be back on the road a lot, I will buy myself one, then put it to EU 19…
