CB Question

Have a studid question.

I have a walkie talkie(has 9 channels, with 38 “sub channels” within these 9 channels).

Is it possible to tune into the CB channels with a walkie talkie, any searches that I have done doesnt get me anything, even when I know that there is someone using a cb very nearby. I see AM and FM mentioned but I dont think that the walkie talkie has them

thanks in advance

In a word…no.

The radios you mention are 446mhz licence free with a 500mw output. They are effectively line of sight, and may get you up to half a mile at best, although greater distances have been known from hilltops.

CB radios were allocated a frequency of 27mhz,which as you can guess,is a lot lower down the band.

Ken.

BUT: check if it’s a walkie talkie, or just a handheld CB. I used it in the past, you can hear others, but when you are in the car, you can be heard in few hundred metres only.

walkie talkies with channels and sub channels are as said on 466mhz
and are known as PMRs personnel mobile radios
this frequency is the one used by RDCs, building sites, and other events for communications.

so whilst not much use as a CB their great for ear wigging when at or near said places

“Brian can you bring the white rabbit costume” over
or use other choice words and cause confusion on site

Yea but then you need to try and work out what sub ch they’re using so they can hear you talking back to them lol

PMR is “Private Mobile Radio” as used by non hobby radio users ( Hobby Radio = Ham Radio or CB although CB is often used in a PMR role)
Those handhelds are “PMR 446” which is something different (Although often used as PMR radios).
I personally have always said that CB should have NEVER been on 27 MHz from before it was legalised in the early 80’s. My own opinion was that it should have been on UHF . There is less band noise and no interference from ionospheric propogation. Who else can remember getting 2 miles range before being blown off by foreign DX??
The CB press at that time was pushing for 27 MHz saying that VHF/UHF were just line-of-sight. What was not said was that the American market was saturated and so the radios were dumped into Europe. Apparently in Australia the vast bulk of CB traffic is on UHF and 27 is about dead, or so I’m told.
I would loved to have a go at 934MHz, oh well…

I remember Cb when it first came out ,it never really took of because of the 27 mhz stuff.Films like Convoy and Dukes of Hazzard let you see what might have been.
