Cars left in gear at traffic lights and clutch down

I was told that they are taught now to keep the car in gear and clutch engaged while waiting at lights,as i was taught to take it out of gear, handbrake on,if a car hit you from you behind, there is no control with it in gear.

how long ago did you pass your test then mate?

In gear and clutch engaged?
Surely it’d move forward… Or backwards?

Wasn’t like that when my little sister took her test last year.

Test,1967. This was the way it was. Not sitting on the brakes dazzling the people behind, :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

1985 for the car test,it was drummed in to clutch in,out of gear, clutch out, hand brake on,i see brake lights on while they wait at round abouts and lights.

I was taught out of gear and hand brake on, when lights change to red/amber clutch down into gear and then move off on green, that was about 10 years ago

Brake lights are on all over the UK,while waiting.

Even worse when you’re driving home from a shift in a mini. You’re eye level with most brake lights then, might as well wear sunglasses at junctions.

The trouble with that is by the time every car selects 1st gear and releases the hand brake the boody lights have turned red again

Notice alot of people, [usually one ‘type’ but I’m not one for steriotypes ] that if on a slight incline at lights will be holding it on the clutch gently rocking forward

On the advanced it is frowned upon to have brake lights on with another behind if for more than 2 or 3 seconds

First in queue at lights out of gear, handbrake on, feet on floor and arms folded - lights go red/amber so engage first/look in n/s mirror then release handbrake/look in o/s mirror - GO (if safe) and a lights have been on green for half a second … sorted

I drive an automatic

I agree with ROG.
Thats how I was taught, theory being if you have car in gear, and hold it on the clutch, if you are hit from behind, foot comes off clutch helping you on your way into cross traffic.
My BMW instructs you to be out of gear, handbrake on, so the stop / start system activates.
Very disconcerting when in this mode for any length of time, and the engine fires back up on its own!

But does your model have a handbrake? Its that big lever thing tweenthe seats?

Ahhhhhhhh nope they call it a parking brake in american cars and it is only used for parking. I do not put it in neutral at traffic lights or at zebra or pelican crossings. I have my foot on the footbrake or it creeps forward .

But IAM also promote “one gear change per manouvre” as is fifth to first etc and drive about with knackered gearboxes :unamused: .

I agree - never left in gear. BUT … stop, handbrake then out of gear in that order.

i drive an automatic, when i know i’m in for a wait at traffic lights, i select N and apply the hand brake, if’s i get stopped for a level crossing, it goes in to park and engine off, i ain’t risking the car creeping forward and i ain’t burn fuel to stand still.

Yup - that takes a bit of getting used to even as a passenger as I have an advanced driving associate with one at the moment - dipping clutch restarts engine - weird but clever
