Car Sat Nav V's Truck Sat Nav

Google maps on iPhone and a bit of know how. I do also have a car sat nav, but I don’t ever fully trust it.

Map, atlas and a bit of common sense, never done me any wrong for over 20years. Got a sat nav as a present about 7 years ago used it for about a month and gave it away. Bloody thing had me down more country lanes and low bridges than I could count so back to map. Atlas £15 against £3-400 for a satnav…no brainer and at least you can look up any obstructions. Btw am I the only 1 who can’t remember routes if using a satnav? When I used a map I never forgot how to get to a place but when I used the satnav for some strange reason I could never remember the route…weird I know lol.

Garmin car nav and common sense, the worst it has done is tried to send me into weight limits. Low bridges are usually marked up well in advance, and our trailers are only 13’ 10" so slide under most of them ok.

used a car one for donkeys with a hgv bridge map, then some kind chap uploaded all the bridge heights onto it for me.

I now have a tomtom 1 with hgv map and its ok (still tries on a local estate to take me up a 7.5t restricted road and wont for the life of me let me pass under the bridge on the way to melton Mowbray in Nottingham if I put anything 14’- 14’4’ +).

as others have said common sense is the best bet but have used maps and ended up on some bizarre roads in Spain.

Now I’d normally agree - but after today’s drama’s beginning to doubt car versions!

Had a delivery in Slaithwaite ( tidgy hole for those that don’t know ) and the frigging places it expected me to get through/down was unbelievable for a 26T.

Found place and was talking to artic driver who came same way as me and he was shaking his head as well so not just me who had fun. Must admit I admired guy as I struggled so well done to him !

For most places it’s ok, semi rural inbred holes it’s a nightmare and no maps would have helped[emoji1]

At least got through the day unscathed! Now where’s DJP and his bad days [emoji12]

A rigid is probably tougher to take down ■■■■■■ twisty roads than an artic

Probably, I was cursing every man and his mutt today and stressed myself stupid over it. Daft but I like to get job done .

I’ll still stick with my Garmin but after today I’m even more aware of where it thinks I can go!

Tested me driving skills and patience to the limit today !

I agree about the new style Tom tom,I think what they are trying to do is steer HGV drivers towards their £400+ HGV specific ones, better off picking up a older version car one off eBay or alike.

That’ll be the £400+ one that costs £330 if you insist on buying from TomTom, £270 if you buy from any number of online retailers?

Whatever,I use a £60 car Tomtom and common sense, those without the latter may chose to buy a HGV specific sat nav.

i got a xgody truck and car satnav of eBay for £35 and to be fair for the cheap price it works really well

Just received mine (finally) few Q’s if you don’t mind.

Hows it doing?
Has it shown any problems as yet
Any tips?

Never used a sat nav - never will.

I use a TT5150 and find the Live Traffic crap! M4 eb has been shut lately between 14-12…easy diversion along the A4 from A338 but would it bloody reroute? Would it bollox! ‘She’ kept telling me to turn down this near on 120 degree left (minute or so from j14) instead of doing the obvious ‘trunk road’. When I got on the A4, ‘she’ was still barking on about turning round and then said ‘a road is closed on your route…would you like to avoid it’!! It seemed that the closure was at the old ‘works unit only’ slip road and not the junction itself. Probably crap info sent to TT who should really check this stuff out first but for a £50p/a sub, it ain’t worth it.

It’s not to bad hasn’t let me down with 44t 16ft high and 65 ft long car transporter lol the in car charger can be a bit of a bugger to get working other than that it’s ok

I wouldn’t trust a truck specific sat nav to route me around low bridges, country lanes, 7.5t limits etc. Its quite easy if you have a good phone with Google maps to check things out. But I have never used truck sat nav, so they could be great for all I know. Should imagine you would have to be on the ball with keeping it updated as roads change all the time. I would probably never get round to updating it.

I have a truck satnav and it continually lets me down, its not worth spending over and above a car one, I told it im 65 ft long and still sends me on routes I cannot get around.

I just ordered one there now,
hope it works well in Eire!!!

I have a Garmin truck sat nav.

I also have my phone to do a quick check of the area if its outside of Liverpool/merseyside

I have A-Z of Liverpool/merseyside if I’m doing drops of that kind to link up with sat nav.

Thursday my sat nav wanted me to go through a horrible little bit in Widnes, quick check in the A-Z showed me a route a bit longer but more suitable

I had a cheap truckable sat nav worked fine not had any problems with it.
Only thing is I find you have to watch is if you have to go down a restricted weight road for a tip. It will take you down a horrible country lane to avoid the restrictions.

But screen smashed on my sat nav on Monday morning and have been using my iphone and map this week.

Think the phone and map is easier.

Thing that I don’t get is the guys that say they won’t and have never used a sat nav.
How do you find streets in towns and villages?
Do you have a up to date street map for every county in uk?

Some of you lot crack me up. If you can’t do the job with a map and/or a basic car sat nav as a guide you shouldn’t be doing it ffs.
I reckon that some of you lot that need a sat nav to find your own arse holes, would be totally ■■■■ ed if some kind of astronomical catastrophe occurred, where all satellites were rendered useless, you would be scared ■■■■ less to leave the yard. :unamused:
How many of you could honestly find a back street in say Eindhoven for example, or even Glasgow without using a sat nav. (Drivers of more than 10 years need not answer that.)

For the record I use a basic Tom Tom Euro, as a GUIDE, I wouldn’t dream of spending an extortionate amount on some fancy over engineered crap as I possess a brain which allows me to use initiative and common sense :bulb:

Is all you map readers clogging up the laybys and forecourts trying to find your glasses to search through your collection of 300 town and city maps and pinpoint your drop that causes others to be over drive time trying to find a pull in

Confession time…, you aint that far wrong,I only got a sat nav in the first place cos I could no longer read the small print on the AtoZs …and even they were from the 80s, so were no bloody good anyway!
