Canada will never get enough Truck Drivers

By classing Truck Driving as a ‘low level’ job, Canada will never get enough truck drivers.

Younger ones are sensible enough to see that there are much easier, much less regulated and much better paid ‘low level’ jobs out there and they are home every night… it’s just never going to happen in a million years, they are going to have to think of another plan quickly otherwise manufacturer ‘A’ will be manufacturing and when ‘B’ want’s to buy it… there ain’t going to be no one there to deliver it = economy doomed!..

But it’s the same the world over, a truck driver is not considered to be a skilled job.

In essence it’s viewed as a job anyone can do without years of schooling and or apprenticeship and therefore rightly so is viewed as unskilled. While there is skill involved in the daily job done its not a skill set that requires years of training to do. It requires years of training to perfect tho - unless like me you where gifted the art of being a superior driver :smiley:

So anyway, I agree with him, the fact that we (truck drivers) are a well sort after commodity, yet we (the majority) are still prepared to work for peanuts confirms this :bulb:

Some of us may be happy with our jobs and earn a decent wage, but for what we do and all that, the rewards are pitiful. If only the masses would realise the position they’re in, we could all get what we’re worth, not what we’re given :bulb:

Although I was once offered a job and the guvnor said he’d pay me what I’m worth, I told him to poke it, no way would I get out of bed for that pittance :laughing:

Your attempt at para-phrasing me is terrible, in fact it highlights your own internal issues if nothing els. When it comes to someone who is claiming me to be a troll? have a good look at your threads through BE forum and this one?

If you want to be a member of some childish “i hate Rikki club” then so be it, i’ll even pay for your membership - but refrain from showing your narrow mindedness in not accepting other peoples view points as it makes you look inadequate.

Remember there is a fine line between participating in an active discussion with a strong viewpoint, and shouting others down in the hope they will bow to your superiority.

I’m thankful that truck driving is classed as as a ‘low level’ job otherwise I wouldnt have got a chance to even work here!.

I guess I am lucky compared to some LMO drivers as I get a basic daily wage (about $152 per day + mileage) but i wouldn’t have come here if I couldnt earn enough toafford to live here.

After being here for a a little while now, and speaking to the workers at all the different places I have been to, most ‘laborours’ working on building sites (Alberta) are getting about $23 - $25 per hour, Tim Hortons Philipino waitresses get $12 -$15 per hour, Truck drivers get ■■? Per hour… some get nothing per hour (only paid mileage) others are $10.25!!! to $38 per hour (Oilfield B-Train tanker drivers) the pay is so messed up compared to other Canadian occupations.

A mate of mine was talking to a driver on a boat to Newfie, he was running a flatdeck Super B doing Hazmat for 22cpm, with zero pay while he was on the ferry or waiting for it, only paid when the wheels turned and he was out for a couple of weeks at a time :open_mouth:

Local oilfield tanker drivers in AB/SK are on average paid around $400 a day and they get home every night (depending on where they live)

Those are two extremes though, on the whole, being a truck driver will put you in the same income bracket relative to your surroundings in every province.

Here in MB the wages are different at almost every company, some pay a higher cpm rate with no extras, some pay a lower cpm rate but top it up bonuses for border crossings, dleiveries, collections, etc. They all seem to work out to the same figure at the end of the year though, so as a region it’s pretty consistent.

In AB, BC and ON the wages are slightly higher, but they are soon swallowed up by the higher costs of living, so they balance out too.

totally agree with NMM in MB the range o wages are vast …ie…one company pays 20c per KM but pays loading./unloading crossing ,half c bonus,per KM half c per km safe driving per month. etc ,etc …another on the same work 35c ml crossing paid, and waiting at 17$ after 2hrs. and another that does very similar but MB & SK only pays 42c ml.on a set run of 3kmls a wk.sat,sun off.but based 1.5hrs away from the others.
and all employ uk drivers .
who makes a decent wage god only knows ,its hard for newcomers to figure things out never mind trying to figure it out ourselfs! :wink: :confused:

By my rough, and poor!, calculations that would mean at 42c ml on a 3k ml week a driver would earn $c1260 and get weekends off!
That appears much better than tramping here in Blighty :open_mouth:

If I went for this I don’t think my wife and kids would come too :frowning: …is there much opportunity to fly back to the UK for visits?

flights are expensive in Canada …no easy jet etc .
Airtransat for flights from uk are not so bad & Aircanada rouge starting up this summer.
Mind no PR for truckers in Ontario.
Winnipeg to UK you either fly tae Toronto then uk or down tae Minneapolis then UK .

Was looking at Manitoba with possibly Winnipeg as a preferred area. Been nosing through ‘Bison’ as a company to start with.
I think its going to be a non starter really as my wife doesn’t want to move away from her father…guess this will be an itch I’ll have to wait to scratch.

Income tax is fairly high in canada though.
If your going as a get rich quick scheme id go back to the drawing board.
Although otr driverd can claim a fair lump back every year

I’ve just checked the Sat-Nav and for the last 15,000 miles I have a moving average of 57 mph. So at 37 cents per mile, that’s $21.09 per hour. Not too bad for driving about, looking out the window and talking to my mates on the phone all day.
