I have my medical booked for the 18th of October so I’m right at the beginning of my journey and wanted to know if there’s no significant hold ups or delays in the system, could I in theory, have everything done and pass my Class 2 test (assuming I pass first time), do my CPC and get my tacho card all by early December? So I can hopefully land a job in time for the Christmas period.
In theory.
I found there was quite a delay between my school getting me through the practical, and a Mod 4 course being available (2 weeks+).
Top priority would be finding a school that can start you off as soon as your provisional comes through, and not keep you waiting unexpectedly for anything.
There’s a big wait for theory/module 2 case studies in a lot of places but if you’re prepared to travel (a long way) you might pick up a cancellation somewhere.
If the DVSA still have the backlog they did 2 weeks ago then you won’t get your CPC card before Christmas but you can legally drive without it (employers may take some convincing)
I think you can apply for your tacho card now and get that out of the way?
I apply for my tacho in Dec/Jan and I got it though, worse thing they can do is say no

You can certainly apply for your tacho card.
A reasonable timetable is to allow 2 weeks for your licence to arrive from Swansea once you’ve had your medical. Then expect a 3 week wait for theory tests (though you may be able to shorten this if you’re prepared to travel). I would be surprised if a good trainer can get you started straight away but it might happen.
So, medical 18th Oct, licence 2nd Nov, theory tests, 23rd Nov, practical training and test likely 7th Dec ish. Some trainers, including us, have Mod 4 examiners on staff to eliminate waiting times for that.
You have one option that might help a little. We will take your booking for CAT C without you having passed your theory tests. But if you fail either multiple choice or hazard perception, you would forfeit your deposit if there is less than 10 working days notice of cancellation.
Just at the moment (and until 1700hrs this Friday - 18th) you can book your CAT C, Mod 4, accommodation if you’re more than 70 miles from us, VAT, test fees, insurance, 1:1 training with a fully trained, qualified and registered instructor for just £1260. You would, of course, take your test at our private test centre where you would have practiced your reversing. So no nasty surprises there on test day!
When choosing your trainer, I dont suggest looking round for someone who can start you immediately. That would often be bad news (but not always). Do look for a trainer with good facilities, up to date trucks and qualified instructors (few and far between as not compulsory). Visit the trainer before parting with any of your hard earned. The only exception is to book on rock solid recommendation. Feel free to ask about us on the forum.
Fire away with any questions, Pete
Theoretically speaking, yes it can be done, however I wouldn’t be looking to get it done by then.
You’ve got to get your theory test booked, then practical training and your test which can take a few weeks. Also bear in mind practical tests might have to be rearranged at this time of year if there is severe weather.
I don’t know if you’ve done this yet, but before you can do your tests, you will have to send your licence off to the DVLA to add your provisional entitlement. Getting this done can again take a couple of weeks.
Also, agencies are recruiting now to make sure they have staff in place for the xmas rush, so they are likely to be fully staffed by the time you could be able to start.
Finally, putting yourself under the increased pressure of wanting to pass first time, and by a deadline, makes it more likely that you will fail.
You will get there, I have no doubt about it, just try and be patient and take your time with it.

I’m only slightly ahead of you in the process and i started it probably close to two months ago.
I would think it’s possible but not probable.
From the point i signed up (with Peter Smythe) there was the waiting times as described above. It just seems to have a natural pace that the process runs at. You’ve got DVLA waiting times, then the training centre waiting times, the theory test centre waiting times etc. They are all individual and seem to be pretty much as described to me at the beginning so no real surprises.
I have just done two of the three theory tests and have my third tomorrow. Then I will be able to book up for the practical training (providing I pass of course!)
