My position on cameras is that I will tolerate a forward-facing one, although not with audio recording as I may have confidential phone conversations on the hands-free kit when driving, but I will not tolerate under any circumstances having a driver-facing camera pointing at me while I scratch my testicles or talk to myself. If I wanted to be under constant surveillance, I would have been born in the USSR or east Germany.
Our lot don’t have any cameras in any of the trucks, forward or driver facing. I could earn more money working somewhere that did but you can’t put a price on self-respect.
here here , there is no need for them

Nearly there again:

A bit harsh maybe.?
Does a driver who has scruples, pride and self respect (a rarity these days btw) offend you in some way?
I ain’t commenting on the subject, it has been done to death on here in the past,.and I have made my position clear on it.
But can I just be the FIRST to say…
‘‘What’s the problem, numerous cameras face us in modern society every day’’
And…
‘‘If you are doing nothing wrong what is the problem with a camera constantly recording and surveying you’’’
(I don’t mean it by the wayI just thought I’d beat the usual suspect crew to get it over with… )
As Harry, driver facing camera is my line in the sand.
Quite happy with as many cameras as possible around the vehicle, very useful and a bonus if the system includes a reversing camera.
Just before the usual suspects tell us all vehicles will have in cab cameras soon, those in proper unions with active members have stopped them being implemented so far.

Thing is Juddian, the ‘‘usual suspects’’ are correct on that point
In the old days of backbone and resistance to general ■■■■ takes in the job, this type of dog ■■■■ would not have been tolerated, but wuth most drivers being as they are today, and as you say Union fims (and the lack of them) , that us how it is going to be unfortunately.
I have reluctantly bent a bit myself as I was ■■■■■■■ in the wind trying to get drivers to stand ip against our cameras, the type which supposedlly only activate ‘‘only in an incident’’ (of harsh braking, sudden stops etc), but let’s just say the one facing me is ‘sorted’.
As for constant surveillance at will, you say ‘lines in the sand’ I reckon that is and would be mine…a ■■■■ good excuse to finally call it a day.
Abd here’s me saying I was not going to comment this time.
One of the many reasons i’m still an active union member Robroy.
These companies need increasing surveillance because like so many they dumbed the job down to idiot level over the years, yet seem amazed that dumbing down has led to the obvious results it has.
The result is the due to a handful of poor recruit choices the rest of the workforce are assumed to be at idiot level by incompetent and sadly often ignorant management, well done chaps demoralise and alienate the high number of decent staff you had because the small number of half wits YOU employed performed as any lorry driver could have told you they would, so just like our govts instead of realising you’ve gone about this the wrong way and try things differently, no, you double down in the belief throwing more money at what has already failed assuming it will work better if you do more of it.
National trait to repeat the same experiment whilst expecting a different result, we see this every 5 years at elections.
You’ve got more three letter acronym systems than enough working on these vehicles now all designed at great expense to prevent catastrophe, but the same fools (its always the same faces) are still wrecking kit and buildings, ramming each other up the arse and turning the whole outfit over on perfectly straight roads, what the hell difference is it going to make by watching a half wit doing their thing as mayhem unfolds…mayhem which was destined to happen because you employed said twit in the first place.
Do you really think the next stage in electronics will suddenly make the bod who you should never have employed into an A1 lorry driver because you’re going to view him? well good luck with that.
The answer as it always has done lies with the operators, it doesn’t need to be a surveilled monitored lowest common denominator job, there is another way which many operators have found, cherry pick your staff and treat them with respect so its a job that no one with any sense wants to lose, and get away from the one size fits all mentality which has thoroughly demoralised our industry.
I waked away from a good paying job as soon as I found out they had driver facing cameras, I didnt know at first as the forward facing camera had such a small lense on the back of it that did not make it obvious. Then the shock of finding out that they are live monitored and employ people to watch them was too much. It is the drivers who allow this who are mainly to blame. The more that kick against it will get them either stopped or allow you to put a piece of tape over the lens. If you did the latter at WREN then it was a disciplinary offence. The need for Union membership has never been greater in my opinion.

^^^^^^;+1
no driver facing camera’s at our depot, and they’ve told us they won’t be having them either. but the outward camera’s have caught a couple of driver’s out…one clown lied about an accident, ended up getting the sack after a second incident in the yard…lied about that as well caught on camera!
I’m more bothered about having to possibly share a lorry with drivers who have got grabs

A grab a pizza delivery?, you know when you run out of hours 5 minutes from your house and the mrs you supply with comfort and cars etc can’t be arsed to come out and collect you so its a delivered graba takeway if you’ve run out of pot noodles.
In cab cameras NO.
Forward facing cameras IMHO YES.
The way I view them is, they are an independant witness. When out on the road alone cameras could make the difference between keeping or losing your licence. Yes I know they will convict you if you are doing something daft, but did you need to do something daft in the first place ■■
I think i come down on the side of the majority of comments that cameras on the outside dont bother me that much. In some ways they are useful as Juddian has said for an extra viewing point around your vehicle if your able to view them. However, i have found others see them and expect you to be able to see them. A couple of times when a goods in person has been directing me into the unloading position they insist on standing where i cant see them in the mirrors and thier excuse is well you have a camera you can see me on that.
All that said there is no need for cameras facing the driver all they are therefor is to catch the driver out and blame him/her for things that have nothing to do with the incident. If you want the security incase of theft fit cameras to the outside. You will catch them entering the vehicle just as well as if there is one in the cab.
