Call for mass conversion of down under's trucking fleet

Are our antipodean mates joining the electric truck crusade? A call has gone out for projects that think big on ways to achieve the rapid conversion of half the Australian vehicle fleet to EV’s – over 10 million vehicles. :open_mouth:
“The retrofit of vehicles, particularly heavy ones, is cited as one of the major initiatives Australia could take to decarbonise its transport fleet, and to provide significant demand for a strong, home-based battery storage industry.”

Click bait, must’ve been a slow news day.

i did see a video about a company in australia that was converting trucks to battery but they were also setting up a battery network so you could rock up they would swap that battery out and you could be on your way in 15 min

Yeah I watched that YT vid too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eYLtPSf7PY

Australia innit: Put a solar panel on the roof of the truck and it’ll run all day!

Just for fun…

1.1 kWh/km and averaging 80kph an array of about 90 kw is needed?

Panels give how much per meter squared? 200 watts?
So we would need 450 sqm of panels.
That is a bit over half a football pitch, or a string of sixty 15m long trailers.

A bit long even for the Aussies.
Back to the drawing board…

Based in Hemmant, which is an industrial suburb near the Port of Brisbane, away from the main highways. At present that apears to be the only charging point.
With a range of 300~400km, that pretty much restricts freight movements to Toowoomba.
The cost of conversion is five times the cost of a full engine rebuild. That does not add up to economical viability. A C ummins engine is good for over 1,000,000km.
