Cab Top Marker Lights

Are these a legal requirement? Does the truck have to have the lights at the top of the cab? If a bulb goes can you get a fine for it?

Yes they need to be working, min £30 fine I believe but you would be unlucky to get tugged for it.

Thats a shame, they are not earthed properly in the wiring somewhere and its causing interference on the FM and my DAB radio, so I was just going to unplug them as they seem quite pointless to me. Oh well back to moaning at the mechanics to fix it then.

And it’s the same for the marker lights on a trailer too…so on the headboard of a trailer, the ones at the very top and the ones at the very bottom of the headboard must work, as well as the marker lights on your cab…so effectively, you must legally have 8 white lights shining forwards on an articulated truck…6 marker lights and 2 headlights!

Do you mean the corner ones or the extra middle ones some trucks have?

Do all tractor units past and present have them? Pretty sure I’ve been in tractor units that haven’t had top marker lights but could be mistaken.

I mean the top corner ones.

Dogmatix:

Volvo’s for example have 3 extra ones in the middle and I believe it doesn’t matter if they are not working.

Yeah, they need to work, the middle ones don’t.

Pretty sure the outer ones need to be white too, ive seen a few wagons that have changed them to blue.

Not sure about some of the really old wagons requirements as when they were manufactured the law was probably different Rob K…but for the last person, yes they do need to be white to show it’s the front of the vehicles, yellow to show the sides and red to show the rear…but any ones that are in the middle such as on a volvo I think can be any colour, and don’t need to work

Except red.

I didn’t know that, although it does make sense “Am I looking at the back of the truck or the front? :S” lol

white to the front, red to the back, blue at the front if you like it from the back

What happens if you pull a container they don’t have top marker lights on them. You then
only have 4 marker lights and 2 headlights.
Why do they have lights on top of trailers any way

Since you ask, a container isn’t a trailer, its a load.
Second question, so you can see where they are in the dark.
Third question, that you didn’t ask, cab top lights are to show that it’s a big vehicle
even when it’s too dark to see the rest of it.

Skellys have two on each side at the bottom if they were built after 1999, as do low loaders and flats.

Tippers also more often than not have two each side at the bottom. Potato bulkers too, but that’s cos 99 times out of 100 they’re built onto a container skelly.
