I have just started with them a fortnight ago. Can’t comment on what they used to be like, but so far so good.
Polite office staff, nice start times, no stupid 15 hour shifts, pay is average. Wagons well looked after and maintained.
Depot is only a 10/15 minute drive away from me which is handy. Lots of drivers at my depot have been there a few years which tells a story in itself I suppose.

lol I could tell you hadn’t been with them long, when you said no stupid 15 hours.
Been with them a couple of years now, and as a ‘day’ guy, the hours are long, often using all available 15 hour days, the pay in my opinion is poor £9 / hour , though in the area I live, I guess it is about average. Totally agree though that the office staff / management are pleasant, you are left alone, the kit overall is kept up together, and if it isn’t, it is normally down to driver laziness, rather than a reluctance to fix things on Downtons part.
When I leave, it will because I’ve found a better paying job, and the hours suit.
Not that difficult voodoo, Smiths is only a few yards up the road from you and pay more then £9 for class 2.
£8 an hour Class 1, in the South?
Disgusting.
It’s an old thread. They pay £9 per hour now. You get £5 per day meal allowance on top of that and a fuel bonus of upto £100 per month as well. Tilbury and somewhere else darn sarf get £9.50 per hour.
Can anyone give me any info on the above company please.you know the usual, what theyre like to work for what they pay ,what work they do and hours.Any info would be appreciated please

Went for an interview & assessment at Moreton Valance (the head office) which I passed. When I said I was on holiday when my supposed induction day the HR manager got quite funny about it. I asked “have I got a job to come back to?” she repied “I don’t know” & never heard anything since.
Not that bothered as I found other employment.
What depot are you applying for?

They only take on casual drivers at Shotton. I suppose it may be a way to get in but its very few & far between, I had a mate go in there for a week.
Heard a rumour that they’re opening up at Preston Brook, any ideas?

How hard are some people to employ?
I will keep my opinions on Downtons to myself, as if you cant say anything good dont say anything it all.(And i do have 1st hand experience not just a MMTM, i worked there for 5yrs in 2 stints)
Wages are as follows:
£8hr Mon - Fri all hours
£10hr Weekends(Sat and Sun)
£15pw meal allowance(Altho i believe this has just been increased)
£19 night out
They also deduct 1hr a day for a lunchbreak.
You wil struggle to get anything close to maximum hours nowadays, When i left 3 months ago i was strugggling to take home £400 a week, and that was with 2 nights out as well.

Thats across the company nowadays, you are taken on as a casual, based on a Zero Hour contract, paid £8.93hr and are not eligible for holiday pay. Sadly the casual drivers at Dunstable always appeared to work more hours than the full time staff.
What i will say is that if you are casual and a full time job becomes avaiable you will be offered first refusal.
Dunno then?:
