C COMPTON HAULAGE FROM POOLE DORSET (With Photo's)

Derrick fridges from Bristol or Bitton to be exact?

Franglais:

Tarmaceater:
STS and Comptons on the “ Love boat “ from Southampton to Cherbourg (Stena Line ) with the grab a granny disco , cinema and swimming pool and those two crazy Canadian or American old geezers who were traffic marshals in Cherbourg who I assumed married local French lasses after the Second World War .
And the photographer who took your photo coming off the Brittany ferries in Ouistreham .

Frank the Yank, and the Canadian guy whose name I forget were much too young to have WW2 veterans. STS were only rarely on that boat if I remember correctly. They mainly used P&O, and the Tankerville freight boat whilst that was running.
Buzzer’s lads, were regulars as were Derrick fridges, Better Keep Going, and some others.
Cheap boat, but a bloody long way from Cherbourg to Italy!

Franglais just for the record we in the day were the second biggest customer out of Southampton on the Stena love boat as it was affectionately known but we had over 30 trucks back then, the main reason it was within walking distance of our yard and we had a very good rate and the drivers loved it, also a benefit when we were coming in overloaded with peaches etc and Terry “weight” the ministry man was about we could avoid any problems, usually the importer we were working for always had 6/8 pallets for Mack’s and after accompanying us a couple times he used to let us drive round there. Me and Gooj used to do a reckie before the boat docked to Norman Offers so we knew if the police were going to weigh trucks, they had a motorcycle cop outside the gate which escorted the unsuspecting to NOT yard to get weighed but we used to alert alot of drivers to avoid trouble and fines for them.
One day we had a phone call from Terry “weight” from Pompy docks, he had an Irish truck over on the pin and asked if we had our light unit the F88 about and how much to drag the trailer to Southampton Market, £100 cash was asked and agreed so off our driver set and got cleared on weight at pompy and when Terry had gone the Paddy said I aint going to the market but down the West country so if you drop it in Nursling services that will be just grand, he paid the driver and we did what he asked, just another of those Mary Hopkins moments, Buzzer.

Gina. Very nice young lady. I doubt you were the only one to fall for her, went in the shoreside for P&O Pompey for a while, saw her on the reception for the foot passengers while going out for…A cup of tea…

Morrie, ran the office at his own company before tying up with Jose Rola at R&G, and I will not say any more about that…
Trevor Mackness drove for several companies including the white Volvo with a blue stripe but NO fridges, and last I heard he was a hunting containers in the Soton docks.
.
Didn’t ome of Buzzer’s drivers get hitched to one of the dancers on the boat?
The summer crossings were too short: two returns a day. But winter crossings out of Soton were a dream.

Anne Marie?
Marie Noel, if I remember?
And the lovely Sylvie was in charge of the office.
Also Valerie, Sophie, and some other very nice lasses and lads. No nasty ones there at all.
The bar at the Cherbourg termial was run by Marie France(?) Who also owned one of the restaurants in the town. 4 tier seafood platter on a Sunday lunch. Anna (married an Irish driver I think) and Caroline worked there mostly.
The previous bar and ticket office was in the old Transatlantic Paqueboat terminal.

I remember Sophie in Truckline, Cherbourg, a lovely girl, unfortunately, lost a child who drowned in Cherbourg bay.

I remember Sophie too , as you said, she was a lovely lady and good looking too .

Marie Noel , that’s her , and Sylvie , if you we’re running late they could pull strings and get you shipped , remember Frankie Carson on New Years Eve on the Love Boat ?
Stevie Holland aka Shady from R&G and his running mate Ian with their two Volvo F12 globe trotters in Portugal.

I think Mick Bingham who drove for Kelvin Hollaway knew her fairly well!

Steve H, Ian P, and Mick H. Were all on R&G. Mick was in the warehouse for a while but driving before and after his stint there. When they actually got on a boat it was Brittany to Poole.
We sometimes used the Stena boat as an hotel at weekends if waiting for a trailer: foot passenger on in Cherbourg, free food, bed and shower, off on Soton, free ticket and straight back on.
Summer time often stayed France, but on boat in winter.
