Bypassing lack of experience & buying a tractor unit

So, increasingly frustrated at lack of opportunities for myself as a new pass. It took me a year to get a class 2 drive, started three months ago. Having similar issues with class 1, albeit I’m slightly handicapped as I have a disabled inc autistic son that I have every weekend.

Just had a cursory glance on eBay and found this:

ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Act … 635-2958-0

Granted I have no trailer and I’m sure I’d be opening a can of worms but has anyone bought a tractor unit and whored themselves out?

Any input appreciated.

TM CPC required, minimum 8k in bank for running repairs, plus money to cover fuel and insurance and tax etc. Not to mention wear and tear and tyres etc.

You need money to be able to put a unit on the road and that is before you even start to get work for it.

Forget it

I would suggest you look at why your not getting the opportunity for C+E work as you already have C experience.

How long have you been driving C vehicles, it’s not generally that hard to get C+E work going from C?

Oh I see you’ve only been driving for 3 months in your post.
There are plenty of forms that take on new passes but it most likely won’t be the type of work you want and probably more graft than driving but it’s always a start.

Do you current employer not have C+E?

Thanks - that’s the answer I needed.

Unfortunately not, no potential for C&E with these guys. I would usually be relaxed but I need to buy a house in the next 6 months or so and I need 40k+ to stand a chance of avoiding a damp ridden shoe box. That and I’m keen to use the pass/qualification.

I did like the look of that unit though

It’s a job seekers market these days, so if you can’t find work there can only be a few realistic reasons why.
Either you aren’t applying for enough jobs, or are being too picky. Remember, jobs are out there but you aren’t going to get a prime job without experience.
Or you live in an area where work is scarce, in which case there isn’t much that can be done.
Only other option that I can see is if you have something dodgy on your CV, a criminal record, points on your licence etc.
Regardless, you say you need £40k+ in a few months? Even the very best driving job won’t see tou getting that much. Maybe in 12 months, before deductions, but that’s about it

Noted - thanks. I mean I need a lender to see I’m earning around that for 6 months or so, so that I can get a mortgage based on that wage, not the 34/36k I’m on at the minute…

Zero points and no convictions. Based in Hampshire so I should be in a decent area. Will keep applying. I don’t hear back from most - Will chase.

The only guarantee about buying a unit and trying it yourself would be that you’d have no chance of earning the money you need in the time given.

Many owner drivers are hanging up keys and taking the PAYE option, unless you are a niche or know of a really good contract it seems hugely unlikely that going owner driver would be a good idea anymore.

Being an experienced and reliable driver with good contacts through existing work could be a way it would work if you are working in an area where skilled drivers in that area are hard to come across and your name would assist in getting work.

Many years ago I considered setting up as an O/D moving plant as I have been doing it a long time and know lots of people around here you could be potential sources of work.

The money for doing it as an employee against the risk and expense of going solo meant it just was not worth further consideration

if the end goal is for a mortgage, any form of going self employed will completely screw that up, even if you earn 80K Lenders are much much stricter for business owners or self employed.

Personally i’d stick to getting more class 2 driving in and jump at a class 1 as and when it comes up as it will. You’ll be in the right place at the right time soon enough.

I thought about this option but there are so many mixed messages about owner driving, some say they get £3 a mile and are turning work away to those who say its increasingly difficult to get work and return loads and struggle to make it pay !

Ask this question on the “Owner and Fleet Operators” forum…
They know more than any newbies.
Or just look at other start up threads there. (That will save you buying earplugs against the laughter. ) sorry.
.

Get a van first.

Try going self employed as a van driver.
Money to be had in it. But lot less hassle when it comes to CPC.

If you go self employed you are very likely to need 2 years accounts to be able to show to a lender to be able to get a mortgage.

I’ve been through this twice and one is still on-going. Stay on PAYE and sort your house first then worry about the job.

The only way to make a small fortune from transport is to start with a large fortune.
Prime mover only means your at the beck and call of the trailer owner, who knows he’s got you by the short and curlies.

Get a mortgage over a longer term , many banks will now give out mortgages up to 40 years, this could help you borrow more. And once you have it there is nothing to stop you making extra payments so you would in fact pay it off in 30 years or less.
