So I run a couple of businesses not haulage related… But Im a driver aswell I work casual for a parcel firm have done
for 10 ten years out of a 25 plus driving history. I also do a bit of self employed driving aswell for a few clients.
So as I have and always had the itch to get my own since childhood of going with my father shunting trailers and stripping
engines from an early age. With the market being saturated right now and with all this covid crisis the market is really strong
to purchase a newer unit at a lower price… So im thinking of maybe buying one maybe 2 to rent out at very very competitive
prices… But I just cant seem to find the right info of going about this… Do I need a restricted o licence to operate them to
move them about etc. Can I just own them and have them in a compound say and rent out without any licence…
And before anybody starts I am really genuinely not asking to go down the dodgy haulier route… Im still going to work
with my other business and still drive casually for firms and I wont be be driving my own through them…

With such competitive market by large and small players. What would be the edge that would Allow your business to have a depreciating product, and yet rent it to a third party at a better rate than the others and for you to still make a profit? Just curious!
If you are just renting the vehicle then you’re not an operator.

Why would an operator come to you to rent yours at an inflated rate (cost to you to purchase + cost to cover depreciation + support + profit for yourself) when they can go direct to the dealer or a truck hire co for probably the same cost but with the security of being able to ring them up and send a replacement when it inevitably breaks down or develops a fault?
Sounds to me like you just want your name on the door and to plaster it with light bars and frilly curtains.
As a small rental company with just one or two units for hire, how are you going to deal with the phone call to say that one of your units has broken down and the customer has an urgent delivery on it? I’m not meaning which dealer will be attending, I’m wondering about arrangements to get him a replacement unit pronto?

Your own it can happen…And you have to deal with it… You get a national breakdown recovery contract in place and get an indemnity insurance cover the rest…Not looking to go global just a little

OK, now that’s out of the way, what about the main part, ie. why would people come to you to rent yours with no back-up if it breaks when they can go to someone like Hill Hire for roughly the same cash with full back-up and a replacement truck if it breaks? I’m not seeing what your USP is here. Perhaps you’d like to elaborate.

Truck rental place down the road from me has so many plain white units laid up in the yard they can only just get the gates closed feels like a lot have been dehired unexpectedly.

I’m not seeing what your USP is here. Perhaps you’d like to elaborate.
Or Gullivers who found truck hire so lucrative they went bust at the start of last year.
I didn’t even know Hill Hire had gone. 
There are 2 or 3 smaller hire companies who specialise in stuff that people need, Maun Motors will rent you a grab, skiplifter, plant, ambulance, vans and flatbeds.
Burnt Tree will rent out a plain white unit or a liveried race transporter, some specialist companies will have a refuse bin lorry or rigid fuel tanker sat around.
That’s where I would be looking to have a truck sitting while waiting for the phone to ring.

WOW … brings back memories of going to Hill Hire on Euroway Bradford to collect a trl … get sent down to overspill trl yard and trying to extract the trl you want … having to move 1 or 2 trls as yours is behind them … then … trls are parked so close you can’t get in to wind legs up 
That said … always had a good laugh with the staff there
