Library Street in Wigan town centre in the early 1960s. The Wigan Corporation buses that
were bound for Hindley, Ince, and New Springs started their journey from here. The large
showroom to the left of the picture was then H.Timberlake, an Austin car dealership.

This location is Walton Lane in Liverpool in the early 1960s The Liverpool Corporation bus is a
Leyland PD2 on route 44D to Kirkby on the outskirts of Liverpool. The construction work on the
right is building a second railway bridge so that Walton Lane can be developed into a dual
carriageway. Also , just to the right of the picture is a large Police Station built in later years.
About half a mile to the rear of the cameraman in Goodison Park, Everton football ground.
Sadly, close to the right of the picture, it is where 2 year old James Bulger was murdered on
the railway line by 2 ten year olds in early 1993.

This is the same location as above showing early to mid 1950s when trams were still operating,
and 1959 when the start of the construction of the second railway bridge was started.
The Austin van is parked at what is now Walton Lane Police Station.

A coincidence that you should mention James Bulger’s murder a few days before Venables comes up for a parole hearing.
I cannot hear or see James’s name mentioned without being deeply affected. At the time our son was the same age as the two murderers, and the happy little 2 year old boy a couple of doors down was the spitting image of poor little James. A few years earlier my wife had had a scare in a shopping centre when our 3 year old daughter suddenly wasn’t by her side and nowhere to be seen for about a minute. I can never get away from the feeling that it was just as if…

Manchester Street in Liverpool.
Immediately to the right of the first picture is the Main entrance to the Mersey Tunnel.
The bus on the far left is a Leyland PD2 from about 1956, the bus ahead of it is an AEC
from about 1949. The Policeman who is talking to the driver of the Morris Minor is one
of the Police which organised this busy junction from about 6 a.m. until late at night.
To the left of the picture are 3 extremely busy traffic streets, St Johns Lane, Whitechapel,
and Victoria Street. From memory, this junction was controlled by Police Officers from
about 6 a.m. until late at night, I seem to recall that the Police Officer stood in a 3ft
high box, painted black and white. Much of the traffic coming down on the right was
about to enter the Mersey Tunnel via a pay kiosk. Pictures from Bootle History Forum.

Hi Buzzer, I have seen this Guy Arab Bus, ex Lancashire United,
several times at Bus and Truck weekends in the North West.
Cheers, Ray.
An unusual photo showing just a bit of a bus. It is an AEC Regent of Liverpool Corporation
Passenger Transport at Linacre Road terminus in Bootle, Liverpool.

Not sure what to make of this coach with windows painted over, anyway credit to eastleighbusman for the photo at Rownhams Services.
