A good picture of an unusual bus, Eddie. It has a Worcester number plate, and above the DODGE letters is
what, in my opinion, is a Renault badge. I will try and find out a bit more info of it. Cheers, Ray.

The Ministry of Defence bought a lot of these buses in the 80’s, all bodied by Wadham Stringer. They also bought a lot of Leyland Tiger’s as well during this period. The Tiger’s were 12m but the Dodge chassis was 10m (I think) so this gave them flexibility. When the Dennis Javelin was introduced in 1987 it gave operators the option of 8.5m, 10m, 11m and 12m chassis. This suited the MOD better so from then on in they mostly used this chassis for all their needs. The bus in the pic is probably one of the Dodge batch but re-registered with a civilian reg no when it was sold on by the MOD.

Dog eat dog I guess, Lucketts bought up plenty of good old South Coast coach companies & became too big & powerful so National Express didn’t want the competition I presume. Not sure that’s good for the customer but things rarely are.

Locally as a lad I remember so many companies around here.

Coliseum
Watsons
Summerfields
Jacobs
Eassons
Marchwood motorways (Osbournes)
Princes Summerbee
Angela

A couple still exist but not many.

Like haulage often their yards are worth big money, Watson were in Southampton on the banks of the River Itchen which is now a huge block of flats. Pitter transport shared a yard with Coliseum as all Pitters but recently ceased trading so would expect that big site to go for housing soon as back’s onto the County cricket ground & Eastleigh Council will build on a postage stamp.

Church Street in Liverpool in the late 1950s or early 1960s. The buses are of the large fleet of
Liverpool Corporation Passenger Transport, except the one nearest the camera, this one is a
Leyland PD2 of Ribble Motor Services on either route 317, St Helens to Liverpool, or route 320,
Wigan to Liverpool. The person in the white jacket in the middle of the people shopping is a
Police Officer, controlling the street crossing. Picture from Bootle Times Forum.

Church Street in Liverpool, albeit looking in the opposite direction of the last picture.
The bus on the right of the picture is an AEC on route 82D heading to the Pier Head
having travelled from Speke district, the bus in the centre is one of the Crosville fleet
of a large number of Bristol chassis, heading to Warrington via Prescot.
