Bull Bars

In this country they must 99% be for decoration. Done a fair bit of driving up and around inverness the last few days and was wondering, has anyone ever hit a deer in a lorry fitted with a bull bar?, did it prevent damage to the lorry, or prevent some of the damage that might have been done?.

i had wrap around bullbars on a transit van once. and i hit a deer, there was no damage to either bullbar nor van, the deer limped off the road and away yonder. I mustve been driving baout 30-35mph on a backroad and it leapt out infront of me from behind a hedge.

Going a wee bit slower than most motors heading up the A9 though

see someone in pink and white scania running up a14 with slanted bull bars?? whats that about

i once saw a cow get flattened on the M11 so maybe h,e just being extra cautious :stuck_out_tongue:

I hit a full-grown stag at 50 mph with a Toyota Landcruiser fitted with an A-bar, the Landcruiser still drove in a fashion but ended up being a write-off on cost grounds.

The deer was very tasty.

i used to do UK/Greece with this, purely for decoration, Trux bullbar, a lot of moneys worth.

not one single kangaroo has survived an encounter with my bullbar

Hit a deer @ 90mph on my Buell(motorcycle) Killed it with my shin :open_mouth: Fur and grease all over the place, thought it had shattered my leg, but it just bruised for a day and then all cleared up :sunglasses:
So I don`t reckon you need bullbars, soft as sheet those deer

So do you think the ones you see in the uk are not fit for purpose?. When you hit ksngaroos does the bull bar protect the lorry from damage?.

I used to drive a Scania 460 with a bullbar. One night I hit a Moose in Ljungby (Sweden)while on my way to Vaxjo. Scared the ■■■■ out of me. The moose must have been over a ton In weight as It smashed the bullbar Into the front-grill breaking that aswell, but at least the radiator was untouched. Police said That I would have to remove the Bullbar before continuing my journey as It was no longer legal (Too many sharp edges). After returning to Belgium, the cab was found to have moved 3cm’s back on the nearside.

Bull bars or moose bars as they are called here cost a lot of money to buy and also spoil the aerodynamic profile of the truck so they cost money to have on your truck.
Whether these costs are justified depends on how likely it is that you are going to encounter a large mammal such as a Mule deer, Elk or Moose and possibly be left stranded with lost coolant after such an encounter on a remote mountain pass or out in the prairies at sub zero temperatures.
These kinds of scenarios are very unlikely in the UK where an animal strike is more likely to involve running a loose Jack Russel terrier over on the ring road so for that reason it’s difficult to justify their cost in the UK.

I want something like the cowcatcher that the old Santa -Fe railway trains had. The working girls would make less of a mess with one of those.
