Hi ROF. What do you know about this Volvo. It looks newish ( X reg ) not to have a fleet no. and too big for coal?

i would take a guess at that being a bulk waste carrier , looks like a net reel at the front . it is mucky enough to be one , dave

Hi, Tidderson,
Wrong firm I’m afraid, matey. The Volvo, which must have been purchased after my time with the company, was the property of George M. Read of Wilderness Quarry, Mitcheldean. George M, or “Young George” was George Read’s son and had previously worked for his father and had, for a short time, been Depot manager at Merrin End after selling to BRS. He left under a bit of a cloud (least said the better) and started up his own business in his mother’s quarry. Plenty of photos and anecdotes on here under the “Forest of Dean” thread.
Young George headhunted me from BRS during my second stint there by offering me fifty per cent more than the red & rust were paying. Unfortunately he neglected to mention that I would be working 18 hours a day!

Stop complaining ROF, there was six hours a day when he didn’t make you work. :unamused:

Pete.

Those six hours were supposed to be for loading the lorries in the yard.
Or, as Bewick thinks, nicking coal from Forest mines!

Hi, Boris, absolutely no contest, pal! We only had the one Seddon at our depot and it was kept as a spare for use when “our” lorries were being serviced. It was on a par with those elderly Leylands for power & comfort!
Have to say you’re wrong on this occasion, Keith. ADG came new to George Read and was first driven by Andy Workman. It stayed in the GR colours throughout the time I had it, with only the fleet number on the front quarter panels to identify it as a BRS motor. It was a real flyer after the workshop lads had played with the fuel pump and would even keep up with our shop steward’s 11.3 Mammoth. When the Big Js came I initially had to be persuaded to let the Mercury go but after the first trip in the Guy I was hooked!

Hi ROF , thanks for that you old sage! Did Georges Marshall tippers pass to BRS as well , regards Keith .

There were no Marshalls there when I joined, Keith. Presumably BRS Cardiff thought they would be better occupied elsewhere. Or weighing them in at the nearest scrap yard!
Maybe leylandlover can fill in the gaps- he was there before me.

The only 6 wheeler AEC flat that I remember was a Chinese 6.It was BRS green.I drove it to Cheltenham to collect spares. Mercury cab 470 engine.Fancy young George buying that foreign muck!!!

I have just be looking through the magazine “British Road Services” A Look Back At The Golden Years.
Whilst reading through, what is a very good magazine,I came across a few pictures which were showing a “blue logo” on several vehicle doors.there was some mention of it being something to do with load security.
I have attached a couple of pictures I managed to get.I wonder if anyone can enlighten me further on this logo.It would seem it was only used for a short time and looking at the vehicle codes,it was used by several different depots.
