Thornycroft, Covent Garden 1951

Nice photo Chris. YG = West Riding reg.

Here’s another for you then Chris, I much prefer the working scene pics personally, more atmosphere

hiya,
Was still doing the odd load out of Covent Garden as late as about 1968
this was when on for Bowkers, normally it would take half a shift to put
the load on and rope and sheet it only to get the phone call to bring it to
the London depot as it’s wanted for the night trunk the London shunter
having been too late to get his trailer loaded “been held up boss” then I
would be left with an empty trailer and a handful of collection notes for
tomorrow some poxy job that the shunter who’s empty trailer I acquired
had failed to load, and I wasn’t the only one other trampers been conned
as well, ooh’ I hated fruit markets.
thanks harry, long retired.

I’m puzzled as to how that driver sheeted and roped that load without a hard hat and hi-viz on, surely it can’t be safe to take down the road !!

Bassman

Hi, bassman,
What you are forgetting is that this was the 1970’s, before crane drivers were dropping 40-foot boxes on top of lorry drivers’ heads, thus making the hard hat a life saver  :unamused:  :unamused:

ROF

This must have been some of the “good old days” when we used what was between our lugs, before the steady drip feed of 'elf & safety became a flood, you know, when you decided if it was raining enough to put a coat on and not be told to.
It must have been the latter days of common sense, before the start of brainwashing. I’ve got to stop this ,I’m getting sentimental.

Cheers Bassman

No, mate- you’re just getting older, like the rest of us!

youtu.be/sDbJ_ZdJqQ0 little film for those who remember old times, the driver is an actor though, hope the link works. fredm

Sounds as if they are all actors, judging by the dodgy accents!

Can any one remember the activities of Hereford depot ? regards kk

I can’t even remember where Hereford depot was! Give us a clue, Keith. (and don’t say, “Hereford”). :unamused:

Was it around the back of what is now Steels Westgate ?
Cheers Dave.

HI ROF , well Hereford of coarse !! . Well it was off Edgar street ,past the football ground , and before the present island on the left hand side
What the street was named i do not know , but it crossed the railway which was a siding for Bulmers , and eventually came out by the cricket pitch by the former saunders Valve works .
The former site now is for twee housing . regards Keith

Hi ROF and Dave ,
Yes the Richmond club rings a bell . But BRS took over that yard from a firm named Morgan and Friend, they ran some unusual Procters that were built by Prails of Hereford .
BRS did i think work for Bulmers , Painter Bros and british Canners ,and the likes of Entress and Joint Motorways would occasionally backload from Hereford .

Dave you may remember Fred Williams of Preston on Wye , he purchased several ex BRS motors from that depot regards Keith .
