i think the white finger thing came with the job harry , along with the bad back, bad knees , etc etc . when you are young you never feel it , then when you get older , it all comes back to haunt you . just so long as we are still here to feel the pain . cheers , dave

hiya,
Yes Dave blessed with all of the above, but i often wonder how much of our aches and pains we brought about by our own errors ie did we ever when younger climb down from the cab, i did’nt it was always throw the door open and jump and get a soaking when securing the load you know “you’ll have to pull off the bay to sheet up driver” and when wet through have to drive a couple of hundred miles with your clothes drying on your back, but as you say Dave just so long as you can still feel the soreness you must still be alive, that must be the bonus do you think.

Hi Harry,
My old man had the same problems as yourself and Dave rigsby,he drove and roped and sheeted flatbeds for over forty years. He didn’t have problems with knee’s etc,but had swollen knuckles and aches and pains from getting wet and handling wet ropes and sheets, also unloading in all weathers.
Cheers Dave.

Hang on Lads while I go and get my Violin to join in!!! Cheers Dennis.

Talking of fires Dave,I can re-call that our first proper office in our 2nd depot in Milnthorpe had a fireplace in the main part.which we never used,as we thought the electric panel heaters would be better. But when the 3 day week was inflicted upon us and the electric was turned off,we lit the fire and I will tell you that our offices were a lot warmer than the using the electric so we used the coal fire for the next couple of years or so until we moved! and no I didn’t spend much time sat against the fire as at that time I was chasing my “■■■■” off all over the place! Dud Allen the retired shunter from the paper mill used to go in and lay the fire every morning before the office staff and transport manager came in(and I wasn’t the transport manager) I would have been at Whitehaven,Barrow or maybe Liverpool when this was taking place!!! Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
I also could get a tune out of the works cat by tucking it’s head in a certain position and tweaking it’s tail sounded a bit like bagpipes but Chris could’nt do it with those IOM moggies nowt to tweak, i should imagine he plays the church organ though and the spoons no doubt that will be part of his repetoire being from Sheffield loads of cutlery made there.

hiya,
V7Victor sorry for rambling on with my stupid remarks when you are going to the trouble of putting such great pictures of so many old motors on here and keeping Frenchy’s thread alive many of the photo’s you have put on i have seen in “the flesh” and actually driven the same models as an old “red and ruster” thank you mate for going to the trouble and keep up the good work i never was into photography and wouldn’t know how to transfer pics from camera to computer so your imput is valuable to me and i would think many others on here, thank you.

hiya,
Yes Trev seem to remember an additional payment for carrying the stuff did’nt fatten the wage packet up all that much though and would just about cover the additional cost of soap and washing powder to get yourself and your clobber clean, I do believe it became palletized and shrink wrapped eventually but i only ever copped for handball, remember getting a load for a tyre factory at Wolverhampton, Wolver depot loaded me with reinforcing mesh for Truro where i got a load of china clay back to Darwen, bit of a story in black n’ white eh Trev OK if you’re a Toon fan.
