Dave I have not heard of Frenchy for ages, I think he has got tight and will not put his money in the meter to use his laptop, he must have spent too much on the move. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

hiya,
I think i’ve put all my memories of my red and rust days on here, it needs imput from others to survive, i never took photo’s so have nothing to offer in that direction and thats if i could post them, i’ve read the the post’s on here telling you a simple way to stick pics on but it’s all double dutch to me, OK so “two short planks” springs to mind but if everybody was a bright spark what a miserable world we would live in, the place does need a few village idiots to which group i hopefully belong, the trouble is this topic is only only of interest to us old fogies who have worked for and can remember the BRS, the best outfit i ever worked for the others i did for where only “also rans” but did pay the bills, if you’re looking in Frenchy have a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.
thanks harry long retired.

Don’t forget the rest of us Harry, who didn’t work for BRS,but remember them well. They were a very common sight as you know in the 50’s and 60’s.As you say they must have been a good outfit to work for,not the pressure the modern day driver has to be here, there and everywhere in a certain time, which in todays traffic is near impossible.I have quite a few pictures of BRS lorries in books, also a couple of prints done by Alan Spillett.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Trev just prior to the the Lincoln Farm “do” in july where you Norm and myself had a meet-up i was doing a bit of a shed clean out and came across a carrier bag with two North East BRS two piece uniform suits in it but unfortunately a mouse family had made their home in the bag and had just about chewed them to bits, just hope they got as much pleasure out of them as i did, my wife always made sure i had a nice clean one for the start of the week, all the other outfits i worked for was own supplied gear usually a boiler suit even in my early days when working at North West BRS, happy days.

Hi Harry,
I’ve got a wardrobe full of the stuff, they still throw more uniform at you than you can wear
Got rid of an old red British road services jacket not so long back, they were a bit loud weren’t they, then we went to sky blue in the Midlands.

hiya,
Trev ours was’nt too bad sort of a mid blue with orange lettering on the breast pocket, i do remember seeing those red tops they was a bit loud was’nt they, things must be a bit different nowadays you had to have your a""e hanging out before you got a new outfit up this way but it did save your own clothes a bit.

hiya,
Have driven many Matadors in the army from age 18 and did drive a 1939 Maudslay Mikado my first motor as a civilian driver in 1957 the model name was changed to Meritor in about 1945/6 the mikado was an eight legger and still in great condition pulling a dyson trailer but oh so slow, only did local and was’nt with that firm very long " just doing holiday relief" but for a newby at that time i felt like king of the road and it was remarked i was the youngest wag and drag driver they’d ever met most lads cutting their teeth on the likes of four wheelers unusually a vehicle i drove very little during my lifetime on the road, this experience got me a start with BRS.
thanks harry long retired.

Hy Harry as you Know I’m an old Red & Rust driver and I will tell of some of my experiences if you wish, so please indulge as I may have mentioned some of these before. I joined the BRS at Hampstead Depot from Suttons, starting on trunk, this would be circa 66. My first nights work was to take a 8 wheeled Bristol on change over at Bromham Lane with a Blackburn motor, I cannot recall what load I had on but this was the first Bristol I had ever driven given that they were built exclusively for the BRS, I found the Bristol which was not in its first flush of youth to be a nice drive as all subsequent Bristols I drove proved to be. I traveled north on the M1 which was a rare route for me as I usually prefer the old road A5/A6 even with a fast wagon, on the last bit of the M45 doing a dipped flash to an overtaking lorry, the dip switch flashed up, burning my hand and half blinding me, oh! a great start, the only lights left were side lights and rears, even the spot which in those days would have been the only forward running light had gone. Anyway into Bromham Lane I go to change over with the Blackburn Trunker who has brought me an AEC mercury Artic probably with Walpamur products on, this machine was rubbish as was most North West lorries, although I did once have a Blackburn Atkinson Mk1 artic which was a very good machine. I have to say that after driving Suttons wagons the state of the BRS machines left something to be desired. I have driven Leyland Octo’s ex Preston which were flat out at 28 mph and then driven MkV AEC’s that could do well over 60 mph the AEC’s of course being Hampstead Depots. The North West Depots were not going to let foreign drivers drive there decent stuff of course, so my answer was too blow their engines up after I told my Depot that the Northern Motors were no good although I nearly lost my legs when a Leyland Octo sent its conrods through the offside straight under the seat behind my legs, still that motor was never seen again. Later I got my own Bristol Unit and did only Trailer change overs, but I had made it clear that I was not prepared to haul North West junk up and down the road…Tony.

hiya,
Tony the only Northwest motors i ever had problems with ie broke down needing a tow was those horrible BMC things i could’n half blow them up, but on the whole Blackburn depot looked after their motors, did’nt Hampstead depot become Whitbread’s london distribution depot ■■ used to fuel up there but never got chance to park up in there .
thanks harry long retired.

hiya,
Wracking my brains as to who you could possibly be thinking would be wanting an 80, but I would want to burn one given the chance biggest heap of junk ever produced in my opinion.
