Chris Webb:
Without me getting the map out, didn’t the A420 run between Swindon and Oxford through Faringdon? I was once stopped there by a group of locals, accompanied by the police, campaigning about wagons going through the town, why I was using the road etc etc.Must have been in the 70s and they seemed to be particularly keen on talking to tanker drivers like myself.
I presume the place is by-passed now?
hiya,
Now then Chris what’s all this about maps when i first started in the crazy transport game maps weren’t invented, i always found if you turned left at Oswaltwistle traffic lights you always got to where you wanted to be,now that was OK when i was working out of Lancashire but my gaffer did complain about all the derv i was using when i moved up to the North East and carried on using my tried and trusted method of navigation.
thanks harry long retired.
Chris farrington was by-passed, but the road was the same the last time I used it, it had several speed camera’s, we used to use it a lot to go to Trowbridge & Cardiff with the old Bulwark skellies when on the lager run, and when we went to Salisbury.

hiya,
Whats all this road number thingy Norm when i was a lad we used the stars to navigate by, the only trouble was you could only do distance work on night shift.

Hi,
I used to do a lot of general work from there, mainly for Telford bottling (cinzano) and Flatler steels, my current boss was a traffic clerk there also. I worked at Wolverhampton depot but we had little in the way of general haulage hence most of my work came from Wellington or Oldbury.

Hi Trev thanks for that . Were Flatler steels based in the Telford then ? regards kk
Well I think they may have been a Sheffield/ Rotherham firm But they had a pickling place in Hadley.
Sometimes I used to cop for 10t of wine and 10t of bright bar for the smoke and it was hells game keeping them apart.
The Cinzano job came into Halesfield by railway bulk tanks and got bottled there for onward delivery to wine merchants.
They did do a lot of work for Sankeys, British sugar, Wrexham lager but BRS wanted to kick all the general haulage into touch and just have contracted work.

Trev, could it have been W.T.Flather,steelmakers,from Sheffield that had a place in Hadley? I never loaded out of their Sheffield works but I used to take bars in from Wolverhampton and Birchley Rolling Mill next door to BRS at Oldbury in the 60s.
hi everybody-wt flathers was on the hagley rd(a456)halesowen-not great drop an hour at least to tip iff a que longer mind sankey at wellington even worse-alan
What i can remember about Wellington depot were the AEC and Seddon 8 wheel sugar tankers that hauled out of Alscott beet works now demolished. Can any one remember if Wellington operated any Bristols ?

Chris,
I think you are right with the name of that steel firm, been 30yrs since I was in there
I can’t remember seeing a Bristol in Wellington BRS, Fodens and Seddons were common but one of the ex. Wellington drivers has a Bristol he takes to shows so maybe they did have some.
I can remember the odd Bristol at Wellington but they may have been visiting from other depots .The Seddon tankers mentioned on the sugar contract may have been those belonging to Wrekin roadways if they had Shropshire regs .
-Cheers Trev werent those Fords followed by Mercs that were 6 wheelers? Am i right in rembering that i would see BRS at Blockleys at Trench ? regards kk
