That would be the Howgate,Whithaven branch “ramone”,but the 8 wheelers that carried those abnormal loads out of DEC were from distant branches as the West ■■■■■■■■■■ branch didn’t have much in the way of that sort of equipment “on tap”,but then again it was in the days when BRS were a large nationwide operation and had no probs whistling up extra motors !I was once empty in W.■■■■■■■ when I first kicked off with one motor (1969) and BRS loaded me for London out of Marchon,IIRC the rate for the job, when I got the confirmation note, was ■■■■■ and thankfully I didn’t rely on BRS for my livlihood like a lot of hauliers had to in W. ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Dennis.PS at least I got paid for the job which was more than I did for one or two jobs off some of the more “spurious” Clearing houses about at that time! :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Missed out on the Bridgend grub stop! However I do remember visiting the Team Valley one quite regularly when I used to deliver pig iron to Gateshead.

If your having withdrawl symptons ROF,have a drool over this load, should keep you quiet for an hour or two throwing this lot over the side if the Rams packed in,“truckfing” will give you a hand as he’s done a bit of handballing Pig Iron in his younger days !  Bewick.

Good grief, that brings back memories! When I first hauled pig iron it was with my old Mercury coupled to a short tandem axle bulk tipper with wooden sides. Tipping gear was operated by a Ford 8 donkey engine which was started by removing one of the batteries from the AEC’s cab. Happy days!

Handball !! good grief man, if the tipper packed in I’d be having a good run in reverse and shunting it out the back

  I remember going to a place in Hazel grove to load scrap, they had no forklift just a mountain of hessian sacks, I had to collect 16t and it took me a good 2hrs to throw it on, my knuckles were dragging on the floor and when I got back in the cab I had to have 10 mins to recover. Back at the yard I was asked, what took so long? Bet you can guess my answer !

Seeing as you have a liking for Pig Iron R.O.F.,heres a shot of 20ton of Workington Pig Iron parked in the depot at Milnthorpe en-route,IIRC,to Fords foundry in Dagenham, however it was loaded by magnet and at Fords, unloaded by magnet.■■■■ it! there’s another missed opertunnity for a good hour or so handballing !! Cheers Bewick.

I could never work out the sense in hauling thousands of tons of pig around the country. Pig from ■■■■■■■ to Dagenham. Pig from Dagenham to South Wales. Pig from Cardiff to Gateshead. Still, it kept a lot of us in work! Luckily I never had to handball pig iron, not like all those loads of Bedfordshire bricks!

Aye & pig from Armstrong Witworths Gateshead to Gardners at Paticroft, A regular job done by John Jennings Transport Gateshead, 50/60s Era, Regards Larry.

I can’t for the life of me remember who I used to deliver the pig to in Gateshead, but I do recall that it was quite a regular job. After tipping I used to call at Team Valley for breakfast before running empty to Cadley Hill colliery to load coal for Cheltenham Hospital. Then another load from Cardiff back up to Gateshead. This was in the days when we had been taken over by BRS and we were scheduled to do two round trips per week. If we pulled our fingers out we could have the job wrapped up by Wednesday lunchtime, then have a couple of days keeping out of sight doing foreigners and run in to the depot in time for a few pints on Saturday dinner! And five nights out a week, of course!

I was told many years ago that there were many different qualities of pig iron from the very finest such as that cast at the old Millom Iron Works where they used the Ore from the fabulous Hodbarrow mine next door to the works, this ore was reckoned to be some of the purest ever mined.I dont think the quality of the Workington Pig was quite as good as the Millom iron but it wasn’t far behind I was told. This probably accounted for Fords buying the odd 100ton or so occaisionally so as to improve their blend in the Engine plant.Cheers Dennis.

That would account for all that iron criss-crossing the country, then!

hiya,
Never carried the stuff but I always thought pig iron was just pig iron, just goes
to show you’re never too old to absorb a bit of knowledge.
thanks harry, long retired.
