Hi can someone tell me how long i can drive before needing to take a break doing multi drop ? ie if i start at 7 am and take a 15 min break at 9.30 what time do i need to take my 30 min break ? i only work 8 hours a day & drive no more than 250 miles doing around 18 drops ? cheers
The other 30 minutes need to come within the 4 and a half hour period.
Evan tho i drive for no more than two hours at any one time ?
It is a culmination of the driving. Probably easier if you’ve got a digital tachograph as that will keep track of your driving time.
When you have done 4.5 hours of driving you need to take a 45 minute break. However, because you’ve got working time directive breaks to take into consideration as well, if you time it right that WTD break of 15 minutes after 6 hours can be taken during your 45.
If you’re lucky enough to have your entire day where you don’t even do 4.5 hours worth of driving, you still need to take that 15 minutes after your 6 hours of driving.
Any queries? Confused yet?
confused ? yep
Don’t mean to sound rude, but how can someone have a licence to drive a vehicle and not even know the basics of drivers hours, and people say we don’t need dcpc
In which case I guess we need to ask the question that we haven’t.
What are you driving mate? Van? up to 7.5t? HGV?
If the latter then you SHOULD know basic driver hours and information as it would have been asked of you during your test, assuming you acquired it recently, like, within the last 10 years or so
So, what are you driving then, Misterg44?
ive just passed my class c an driving a 7.5 tonne,
I asked the question because i was unsure due to the small amout of driving i do between drops
Maybe best to start on your 35 hours dcpc, do a 7 hour drivers hours course and you will be sorted
Alternatively from most truckstops or amazon you could pick up a book called ‘The Truckers Handbook’
I think that’s what it’s called
cheers
6 hours max work (everything) before a break, 4.5 hours max driving before a break, which ever comes first.
On Multidrop it can be either so you need to keep an eye on it… When we go out doing multi we try to run the 4.5 before taking a 45 min break then run another 4.5 [if needed], with stops for deliveries it will be a 10 hour day.
But make sure you keep track of your times, you really need to be looking for a logical place to stop (cafe, safe place to park etc] after 4 hours… I talk as an idiot who ended up looking a sheep for 45 mins, didnt get home any quicker, just got to park in the countryside…
The guys are right, this is your licence thats at risk and you really do need to know about this stuff, but come on guys, why beat up on him for being uncertain? Just give the info

Are you driving from 7am-09.30 am ?
If so and you’re going to be driving for another 2 hours, then you need to take another 30 minutes.
As you’re starting at 7am,you need to take a 15 minute break at 13.00 to cover you for the WTD rule.

Hi misterg44, looking at what you’ve posted you are ok with your 15 mins break at 9.30 as it would cover you for the WTD. Then just keep an eye on your total DRIVING time and take another 30 mins before 4.5 hrs total. Write your driving time down on a pad if need be
and just make sure your breaks are a minimum of 15 and 30.
And in that order too. It has got to be at least 15m then if you were having a second break then that would have to me at least 30 minutes.
Good luck

And take a look at this free issue of drivers hours.
Cheers chaps ! i have got it right then & im taking my breaks at the right time ! thanks to all for clearing that up
Breaks:
— Mobile workers must not work more than 6 consecutive hours without taking a break.
— If your working hours total between 6 and 9 hours, working time should be interrupted by a break or breaks totalling at least 30 minutes.
— If your working hours total more than 9 hours, working time should be interrupted by a break or breaks totalling at least 45 minutes.
— Breaks should be of at least 15 minutes’ duration
so u start 0700 and finish 1700
by 1300 not exceeded 4 1/2 hrs drive then a 15 mins brk should have been taken anytime before 1300 then a 30 mins taken after you have got to 41/2 hr drive would keep you legal

Isnt that why we are here , no one should be afraid to ask a question no matter how silly anyone might think it is , we might be able to help him understand something by saying it a different way
