There was a distribution depot. at Doncaster and I drove for Bowater Scott from 1978-1980. We got our products direct from Barrow and our warehouse distributed East from Doncaster.
My regular run was Lincoln and most of Lincolnshire. I drove a 12tonner Ford D series similar to the one pictured (Reg. KLT 50 P I think). We had a fleet of around 20 lorries based at Doncaster. I remember being stranded in a very remote part of South Lincolnshire in freezing fog when the foot brake valve iced and stuck, we didn’t have mobile phones then!.
Happy Days,
John Oglesby.
They used to have a depot in Yate many years ago.
And Bristol, I think it was in Avonmouth or somewhere near the docks. There used to be a skip in the corner of the warehouse which was full of toilet rolls and if you asked the forkie if you could have a couple he used to say “yea just help yourself”. This stopped about 1974 as one of the local drivers who was always in there was found to be selling them cheap at a Sunday market nearby.
Maybe Gerry Mac might remember exactly where the Bowater Scott Bristol depot was, if he can’t then I bet he will remember where the Top Rank Suite was.
I have an idea that when they closed Yate they moved to Patchway, on the estate by Cribbs Causeway.
Following the photos that Bewick has put up of Bewick’s motors pulling loads for Bowater-Scott at Barrow I thought I’d add a few photo’s of Bowaters units. These are ones from Barrow-in-Furness depot as this is where my dad started driving and where my grandad was a driver too> There was also a mill at Northfleet, and depots at Oldham, Hinkley (where I was nearly born!), East Kilbride. There were maybe more I dont know.
My dad’s first truck at Bowaters after he moved up from the warehouse after driving a fork lift.
My grandad’s Seddon 32:4 at a LDoY comp. Some of these Seddons had 180 Gardners and the others had de-rated 220 ■■■■■■■ down to 205hp. The Gardners had higher geared diffs in them but died on the hills, where as the ■■■■■■■ had geared diffs in them so could only do 60mph but the did it everywhere (if you could stand the noise!)
This was the later colour put on this Seddon driven by Nev’ Butriss and my grandads Leyland Mastiff with a V8 Perkins (apparently they used to go through water pumps quite quickly) which were a bit better than the Lairds they had before.
This is my dad in front of the Sed Atki 400 he ended up with. it had a 200 Gardner and 6speed DB 'box with an Eaton two speed axle(my dad says they should have had Fullers). This is my dad (ian) in front of it along with my grandad (bill) behind the wheel. The opange flat which it is pulling was owned by Brady’s.
This is what they ended up with after my dad and grandad left.

Nothing could fall of those motors Steve !! Dennis.
Thats true. Although you wouldn’t trust some of them Barrovian drivers with a flat trailer! Luckily Possie was there to keep em in check (and also to make sure the loops of dollie hitches were all in line!)

Thats my Urkie now you understand why I could get loaded in Bowies faster then anyone and boy did it get some of the other contractors annoyed!! But thats what good mates are for !! Dennis.
Backloaded from Bowaters @ Northfleet many a time.Paper sacks - think it was via Len Vasler. . still going arent they ?
Also used to load out of Bowaters, Ellesmere Port.
Yeh LV is still goin but I think the paper sacks were made by Bowaters. They had red AEC’s. They might have been the same firm at one point.

What i should have said was, used to load out of Bowaters factory but it was done via LV tpt - would have been mid 80s and went into LVs yard now and again. They had mainly ERFs(B series)? in those days iirc - nice tidy fleet, proper signwriting and coachlines . Happy days
Anyone on here remember that made paper sacks just outside rochester called robinsons sacks.I remember the load it was sacks stacked on pallets and i onl’y had one load off them and was glad.I was working for w nuttalls of clifton m/c at the time and had a leyland comet. It was ipn the 70s so when i was loaded i sheeted it as tight as possible and roped every hook and it kept settleing. If i tightened the ropes once i must have done it a doz. times.Im sure all of us who have r/s have experienced such loads.Sorry for going off thread.
regards dave.

I have a shot of two of our motors loading in Robinson Sacks on the Esplanade in Rochester. We worked for Robinsons from 1969 to 73/74 and when we first started there were no pallets it was all down the belt handball!! It was OK at the time and then we started collecting as much Wood-Pulp as we we could cope with from Tilbury straight back to where we came from so the Robinson traffic fizzled out.We used to stop in some great digs in Rochester The George pub in the High street the landlords name was Clyde he was Irish and what a great bloke he was always a cracking breakfast no matter what time we were going in the morning! I will see if I can find the shot of our motors at Robinsons.Bewick.
