Borough Market attack

Our thoughts are with the people affected by this appalling attack who were just enjoying a Saturday evening out in this vibrant area of restaurants and bars.

However, does anyone have fonder memories of delivering to the old fruit and veg market? Narrow roadways and running the gauntlet of the Market Beadles who decided if you could offload or not?! Happier days?!

Yes I used to endure the boro’ often. The best time was when a trader tried to claim that he was 40 boats of tomatoes short. Left the lorry blocking his stand at 4 am and came back again at half past nine after the consignor had told him to put the lot back on the lorry again or sign the ticket for the full amount. He was not popular with his neighbours either because they were having problems selling with the lorry stuck in the way.

I used to regular with my Dad - used to deliver flowers from Manston airport

I used to go to the boro many times with my dad when I was a kid.
Clive Bourne was one of the stands we delivered to.
I can remember it was a nightmare at times in an artic, especially the left hand turn at the end of the market to get back to borough high st.
On one occasion some grumpy old git started setting his stand out next to where the old man was delivering and started stacking all his gear in the road,he told him he wouldn’t be able to get out with all his stuff stacked there but the old codger ignored him-when it was time to go he just drove straight over it all!!!

I remember too, delivering to all the old markets, Billingsgate, Spitalfields, Borough, a nightmare to park…but give the traders their due, they would block a space with pallets if they were expecting a delivery, was a great time listening to the craic amongst the porters…great days.

Used to have an occasional morning pint down the Borough after a night shift.

I like how you used Saturday’s atrocity to reminish about the good old days.
Surprised that nobody has mentioned darkies yet.

Edit to correct [zb] auto correct.

Because.

It’s easy to walk away, and pretend it doesn’t happen. People do it all the time. And it empowers the bad people when nobody tells them that they are bad.

The bad people were discouraged by a lot of policemens bullets. They no longer feel empowered.
