Whats happened to DEANB lads…just noticed he’s not been on for a while ?Here is one for you Mark.
That is a very smart little van. We were going to buy a Leyland 2 tonner in 1964 and have Marsden build the body, but instead chose BMC FG 2 tonner integral Marsden instead DPT100B . Was just as well because a local Lemonade factory Grays Soft Drinks, the owners who my Grandfather & father had known since about 1910 bought 20 and they were complete failures, breaking down almost daily, and although modern looking for their day didn’t last long. Thankfully they warned my father off
Thats intresting to read about the Leyland 2 tonner being an unreliable motor Carl. I wonder if it was teathing problems that were sorted out.
Does anyone know if it was a short lived model as i dont ever remember seeing one as a kid, although i probably did .But you mention the BMC FG 2 tonner and there were loads of those about when i was growing up.
Hi Dean The Leland 2 tonner was introduced in 1962 and I was surprised to read it survived production until 1973.When in 1963-early 64 we were considering buying one, as a new vehicle they were very popular with the Leyland name, I suppose. When operators experience became knowledge, sales seemed to slump & never recovered. I can never recall seeing many new ones after late 60s.
With regard to the FG They were very popular and good vehicles, at least with the 3.8 litre 4 cylinder engine which we opted for in all that we purchased. Our first was a 2 tonner, that I mentioned, but we went on to buy 4 30 cwt and 1 3 tonner. Apart from our first which had a Marsden Integral cab the others had standard cabs, which wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but was virtually maintenance free . Here is a photo of one of our 30 cwt Standard cab with luton bodies by Marsden

Hi Carl,
What type of engine would have been in this model Leyland back then ?
Mark, my father had a flatbed with a Ricado engine. IIRC it was direct injection and was always hard to start. It was only run local on day-work with a civil engineering company.
He sold it to a coal merchant and picked up a real nice FG tipper, a great tool.
Ricado’s were also fitted in Commer’s up to 7.500kgs gvw.
Great pictures yesterday lads , as your talking about the humble FG here is my dads version ,I know I posted before “sorry” .
The Leyland 90 model was dropped when the old BMC range became renamed as Leyland Redline as it more or less ran parallel with the lighter FG/later Terrier models that Leyland had absorbed. There are at least a couple in preservation though.
Pete.

We also had one of these JU luton’s ‘H’'Reg which was the same as this one. They were sold as complete vehicles by BMC distributers… We had bought a new J2 luton (D reg) the previous model with a luton body by Bluebird The caravan makers of Southampton it had 1.6 diesel engine and over the years it was called allsorts but realistically what could you expect for the money.
We were operating a few small vans amongst the mainly Bedford fleet of SBs & KF’s The D reg J2 two 3.25 ton GVW diesel transit’s with luton bodies by Marsden & a Bedford CF 3.25 luton by Marsden and were waiting for them to build the first of our 3.5ton gvw FG & needed something in a hurry, and dad said to me ‘How about one of these JUs ?’ which were available for immediate delivery & virtually given away for what we were paying for small Marsden’s
Although we’d said no more after the J2 being realistic it was then4 years old and had settled down. It had been overloaded and flogged up & down the road (Often by me) so we bought one 1.6 diesel engine. taking the price into consideration it was OK.
I was just thinking of when we sold the J2 & JU & I couldn’t remember, so possibly they were both still running up to 1986
With being a BMC dealership I worked on plenty of JU’s, even had a weeks course at Cowley on them. Early ones suffered from kingpin /bush wear as they were nylon lined bushes and wore rapidly, also throttle cables on petrol versions gave problems and exhausts also dropped off regularly! The throttle was modified with a retro fitted factory ‘kit’ that repositioned the cable run and included a bracket to reposition the foot operated screen washer, a different exhaust was produced and, for the later MK 2 versions, different kingpins and bushes were fitted which solved that problem. Not a bad van, nice to drive but of course the ‘Transit Plague’ eventually killed off many other small vans.

Thank you oily ,
I think the Bishops Daf was built at the same place as our new Tgl ,I wonder if the paintwork was better than ours ?
