We had some great jobs, some weird ones and even some scary ones.
Now there’s a thought. I can’t recollect any weird ones in particular, but then if you spend any decent amount of time doing household removals you develop a pretty wide tolerance for the way people live and the things they have.
Scary ones? Lemme think… (the rest of you can jump in while I rummage around in what’s left of my memory)
Now I know there was no damage on that load because I was the porter that day , I posted the pictures at the time because this was the step walk , note the view !

Just a little card to say Merry Christmas to all that read this thread
Thanks Carl. Best wishes to everyone for the festive season and thanks to everyone who’s contributed to this thread. To those still ■■■■■■■ big lumps of furniture around may the New Year be full of fully functional lifts, ground floor flats with 6’ wide doors, good tippers and customers who don’t need reminding the box with the kettle and the tea goes on last.
Hi Carl , im sure they closed about three years ago , they were handy if you had a tiny return load to go to Scotland , you could make a few pound with out doing much .
errrrrrrrrrrrr that’s horrid Chris ! ,you need to clean your glasses ,all that polish from your cab has frizzled your brain , come round our yard and Mel will shake it out of you !
The one thing I could never understand about Pickfords, is, since the days of the Guys, that I always saw as a young boy in the fifties, why they never attempted to standardise on one type of vehicle. Standardisation offered great savings to vehicle operators as it enabled keeping a stock of vehicle parts to make vehicle repairs and maintenance so much more efficient.
I remember the days in the sixties when most of our fleet was made up of the Bedford SB passenger chassis. It was the days when the TK became popular and as a relative specialist product the SB parts, that weren’t compatible with the TK were not always as easy to locate. We must have had nearly a complete vehicle in parts in our vehicle stores. I remember we always had four front springs and four rear springs as an example. If a vehicle came I with a broken leaf in a spring it was a quick job to replace. The large generators designed for coach use was another case whee we always had three getting each reconditioned as they came off and putting back into stock.
We were also fortunate that Wallace Arnold the coach operators ran a large fleet of SB coaches and were also Bedford agents in the Leeds area, with a huge stock of parts. In fact if they hadn’t a part, as they reduced their stock, as the SB gave way to VAL and VAM chassis they used to send customers to us to buy SB parts.
However Pickfords seemed to run Bedford, Ford, Dodge, Volvo and a real mix. Here is a photo of a Renault.
Does anyone know what their policy is on new vehicles, since the recent ‘Change of ownership’ earlier this year?
