Blood, Sweat and Broken China (the Removals thread)

JAKEY:
Hi Carl , five oceans is a new firm around Oxford with plenty of overseas removals , not had to quote against them as far as I know ,Lukers motors do plenty of mileage in there life time as they do lots of Swiss moves .They started with one truck with Mr Luker himself ,dad knew him very well and he lived well in to his 90s and only6 passing away about two years ago .

Hi Jakey,

Does the national liveries either by large companies, which often don’t show the town where vehicles are based destroy the variety of vans on the road.

Is destroying individuality of design and colour of the smaller town based companies of old, a sign f the times in this internet world, or will small companies win through?

I can’t help to think back to the days in the eighties when the banks and building societies took over nearly all of the individual estate agents, only to find that in a few years they were not making the easy profits they were used to, and the public to want back the orriginal family businesses.

Carl

Hi Carl,Pickfords never had the depot name on the vans,i think it was by doing a job as a return load, it would be cheaper but the client didn’t know this.

In our day Pickfords did not rate with many potential customers who tended to like to deal with individuals. I think it could well be a mistake for anyone to copy Pickfords.

Here is one of Pickfords with the town name on the side.

Carl i would say with Pickfords it is just about the same .

I use to sub for them and what I saw was very bad , but you cannot say that about all the depots.

Good heavens Carl, many mammaries right there. I remember seeing a Wells wagon in the yard of the antiques shipper/ restorer mob I worked for in Somerset (where at the tender age of 19 I learnt how to carry, stow and pack fragile furniture). Fabulous shot of a vehicle owned by a company who took pride in what they did and their wagons too.

Thanks Carl.

Took this shot last year when I had to collect some items from there store near Bristol . very long established firm .

Here is one from Clockwork that looks cleaner than the last

Hi Carl ,i would say that truck was brandnew in the last photo .

A tidy van from Burton & Smith

I look at that and I hear the words “tail swing” echoing… nice wagon but who’d want to be the first to put a scratch on it?

Hi Park Royal

Yes the overhang is a bit much, bet the drop well was long.

Here’s one a bit shorter that would be a more interesting drive!

My mother and father had furniture for their first home from Staite’s when they were married before the war, although I doubt if it was delivered by this van! Not sure if they are still in business although I can remember them in Eastgate Street, Gloucester in the 1960s.

Hi Carl , dont think Harrods do removals any more , they wouldnt do a council move would they ?Great shots of the old firms .

I like that a lot, I think I fave’d it on your flickr photostream Carl.

I just want to add my thanks for all these photos you took and have shared here and on flickr. So many of them I look at and think [zb]! I remember them (and I can picture their livery even though the photo may be B&W), and I’m sure they remind many who were on the road back then of times past.
