I think they have got to get things moving soon as…the housing market will go down the pan…i think its fragile now but still there if you know what i mean.

Dean i remember my father going to pick up a swan neck flat trailer from Pickfords in Manchester for Griff Fender…and they did the same thing with tarpaulin covers when they first started container storage back in the very early 1970s…the trailer became surplus to requirements after a couple of years after they converted a couple of the removal vans in to container vans…i think this is the early days of container storage…nice article once again Dean…Gersons are part of Abels these days…thanks for posting.

You just keep on jogging the memory Dean…the first of Pickfords Dodges as you can see the first of them were used on the mail order contract they had back then…there were two based in Swansea around this time 1981/ 82 with the white distribution bands.

Did they have many of those Dodges Mark ■■
They never stopped buying the mighty Bedford’s. I wonder how many Bedfords they bought each year back in the 1970’s.
John we have started up slowly with four of us ,i got five containers Burnham on Sea on Monday ,the wagons will be parked up for the night on the sea front .

I think that trailer from Manchester might have ended up with me. I was in charge of Pickfords Distribution in Scotland in the early 80’s when we had the contract to deliver furniture on behalf of all the catalogue companies. Prior to my arrival they used to send deliveries for the Shetland Isles via Macbraynes but the amount of damages was horrendous as they were transhipped into ordinary box vans before being shipped. There was a lot of traffic going to the islands then as this was the only way they could get access to modern furniture at decent prices. At that time there was a container service from Grangemouth to Shetland (once a week I think) and I arranged for a 20’ step frame trailer with twistlocks to be transferred from Manchester to us in Glasgow. The shipping company provided us with the containers f.o.c. (the use of them not the freight costs!!) and even allowed us to use the container as a store after its arrival on the island - I guess they were keen to get as much traffic as possible. I set up a driver and van on the island to re-deliver the furniture up there and from that day on we had no more claims for damages and the costs were considerably lower than we had been paying to Macbraynes. Win-win for us.

Hello John , that job out of storage has been cancelled mate , only got one container to Petersfield now on Monday , the old Kangoo has now developed a water leak from the water pump, had to change the battery on the Vito and both batteries on the Hoffs tgm (the two on his motor was warranty), still using the kangoo for locals though . she is a 2002 van so i should expect problems as she was parked up in the warehouse for five years .

Thats a shame that the job has been cancelled JAKEY lets hope things pick up for you.
Do you fit cut off switches on the batteries so they dont drain down if parked up for a while with the tacho running.
