Yes he did, they both worked at Bird’s at the same time as me.
There were quite a few ex M/E lads at Bird’s at the same time, Peter the Plater, Billy Thomas, Dai Blunt, Eddie Nixon and a few more who I cant think of right now.
It used to be a good laugh when running with these lads & the tales they came out with.
Platers a legend !!! lol
Martin’s on FB under John Thomas.

Yes Pete I remember Graingers Commers with the high headboards and Cartwrights who had a big fleet at one time. They done a lot of Irish work which I believe was picked up by Birds when they finished, they also ran to the Middle East in the early 70’s, I had a few mates that drove for them. Do you remember the Krupp cabbed Atki they had ? I’ve never seen any photo’s of this firm.
Cartwrights had a maroon F89 Volvo, as I recall, I ran back from Turkey on one of the trips, but I cant recall guys name now…
I cannot remember the Atki Trev but i bet Mr Saviem will, i remember the council putting them bollards on the footpath to stop them parking in that side street opposite Old Heath Road, they are still there! And Hopey i can only remember the Scania 110’s as i was still in shorts!! Cartwrights ended up part of Chris Kelly’s empire, Cheers Pete

Evening all,
Ah the missed love of my life…that Krupp cab Rolls Atkinson.
When Alan Taylor was still running Cartwrights, she sat at the bottom of the yard next to Willenhall Road. When Chris acquired Cartwrights we were talking on the phone and I asked him if she was still there…“do you want her”?..I was overseas, and the thought of parking her, (refined lady though she was), at our home…well you can imagine…let alone drawing the cash out of our funds…so I declined…and still regret it!
Cartwrights became very large, I will ask Chris just how many they ran when he acquired them. (Though they all looked pretty rough)!
Pete, I`ve a feeling that those bollards were put in not to stop Cartwrights, but there was another haulier up there, ran pale blue ERFs, and had a restricted access warehouse on the left hand side, I cannot remember their name, perhaps Trev H can?
Cheerio for now.
Was R K Crisp’s yard on Amington Road in Tyseley (shared with Storage and Haulage) ■■

could have had a chance with hayes roadways mid eighties but opted for w.a brotheridge
For what it is worth…but perhaps for some participants a nice memory or lead to …
Found a ERF driver’s book on the A-series, which belonged to Hayes Roadways Ltd with driver Trevor Norris.
The chassis was #25082 bought 21st May 1973 type LAG160 011 with Gardner 6LW #188224 and registration
was LFD273L. Wheelbase was 22’ 6" and VGW 16 tons

Maybe had the 500 Bedford engine “H” ! Cheers Dennis.
Evening all,
Harry, Dennis, the powers that be at Davenports were so “conservative”…a Detroit would have been a step too far…although they did have a Detroit Demonstrator from Prestage for a month!
All the units were Bedford powered, and all the little ones were either Bedford, or Commer/Karrier … but of course the Trailers…Highway, and Gerald Broadbents Tautliners!
Fabulous company Davenports, (Beer at home means Davenpors…and the Gentleman who spoke those words was a Director of Davenports…and severely unimpressed when I blocked his covered loading bay with a single axle 40ft Tautliner…
Perhaps a story for another day…"their`s, were all 28 ft…remember when that was a “big” trailer?
Cheerio for now.t
