Hi John,
I used to do a lot of work from Oldbury depot but I rarely went in the office, I only remember a chap in there named Clive but we normally had loads arranged by the yard foreman. Small world though isn’t it, my brother loaded the steel lorries in the rolling mills at Bilston and knew all the Oldbury drivers, plus all the many other firms that loaded from there Andersons, Webb bros are a couple I remember.
Bilston works were quite strict on the weights of lorries leaving their site, Andersons drivers reckoned they stopped at other firms on the way home to add to the load whether that was just talk I couldn’t say.
There was a re-rollers next door to Oldury BRS called Wolverhampton and Birchley Rolling Mills and that was BRS work.I backloaded out of there several times in the late 60s,usually for W.T.Flather in Sheffield.Webbs from Bilston and Davis Haulage from Smethwick (Rolfe Street) are two names I remember very well.
How about Sheldon & Clayton. They moved a few years back and I think their address is Black Country Rd.All their motors I have seen are plain white, indicating to me hired or leased, but I`ve been wrong before. They used to trunk three trailers every night to Scotland, doing changeovers at Lockerbie.I used to use them a fair bit as they ran two flats up here.
Mark.
That name rings a bell, but can’t quite remember where or who they were, I’m thinking they used to run a a gaggle of Merc 307 pick ups in the '70s, on specials to the Oil Riggs around Aberdeen. Did a bit for them through Thomas & Guest I vaguely remember. Wonder if they (Thomas & Guest) are still going1
Sheldon+Clayton still operate from the black country rd West Brom and have grown considerably since they ran those Merc pick ups and a big part of their business is groupage shipping, which brings me to another small world coincidence.
Last August I attended a motorbike rally in North Holland at Sint Jankslooster and got talking to Alex a Dutch lorry driver from who rode a similar bike to mine (Honda cx650), anyway he told me he worked for a German company taking loads to the UK but telling him I was from the Midlands he said that he backloaded from Sheldon + Clayton at West Brom did I know it? Well I replied I ought to for years I had been taking 20t of metal bar in there once a week for onward shipment to Germany, he laughed out loud and said he collected 20t of metal bar once a week from Sheldon’s to take back to Germany, Yes we had both hauled the same load for years and I met him in Holland on a motorbike

i used to work for w a brotheridge in wednesbury about 22 years ago.they had a mixture of wagons, they used to sub work off and too kites from nethertonHi Curnock,
Now there’s a blast from the past
I remember going into W A Brotheridges yard before they moved to Wednesbury when they were in Delph Road, Brierley Hill (Now Delph Trading Est) with my Dad in the late 70’s when I was a kid. If I remember rightly they were predominatly Commers and Dodges at the time.thats before i was there but you are correct they were in b-hill.they had quite a mixture when i was there, they sold out to fellows transport around 1989 who were owned by kelltruck but they finished a few years back but as you know kelltruck still survives
Was that when Keltruck went on that manic buying spree buying Genners (Quarry Bank), Gauden Sheppard (Halesowen), along with H Fellows and a firm in Wolverhampton whose name escapes me?
yep thats thre one
Does anyone remember Coopers of Wednesbury, I worked for them on night trunk in the early seventies, so did half of the west midlands I think. I worked out of Crawford at the scotch end. THE SHERIFF.

Bubbleman …if your well in with Hayes ask them about the black and whites. the chap who worked for them was Ed Bloor.

Well, somebody correct me if I’m wrong but Hayes and Bakers must be two of the oldest Brum/Black Country hauliers still going.
I certainly remember T Bakers loading angle iron out of the District Iron and Steel Co down Brasshouse Lane off Holyhead Road in the late 60s,and Hayes running up the A38 to Sheffield in the same era, along with Webbs,Hemmings,Coopers,Davis Brothers,Hamptons,Adam Jones,J B and S Lees,Round Oak Motors,BRS,GKN,Joseph Lucas - the list is endless - steel up,steel down, day and night …
… and maybe a bit of Ripley Pig in between

You may well be right about Hayes and Bakers, I can’t think of any firms from that time in that area still running, I remember all the firms you mentioned. A couple that spring to mind which I haven’t seen mentioned on here is Joseph Foulkes, a big outfit in the sixtes and Cartwright transport of Wolverhampton both probably running over 100 lorries back then mainly Scania fleets. Cartwrights ran to the middle east in the early seventies but also ran a lot of traffic to Ireland, their trucks were maroon and white if anyone remembers them.

I forgot about those two Trev,Joseph Foulkes worked for the Wednesbury Steel Tube Company I think.Leonard Green,BRS,GKN,Joseph Lucas,20th Century Transport and some motors still in Richard Thomas and Baldwin colours after nationalisation.Lye Steel and Round Oak Motors were another two. There were so many hauliers out of WM in those days on steel haulage just like Sheffield and now they have gone.
If I tried make a list of them somebody would keep adding to it

What about J Hayward & Sons of Walsall Ltd. (Established 1919) Don’t know if they count as Black Country (as Walsall, I think, used to be Staffs.) but same neck of the woods. A fair time running and still going.
