well nearly 2 yrs ago now i passed my c & e may one of the first jobs i got through an agency was driving at birds eye for the pea season . i thought it was great , it came as a big shock too hear the workers there are too lose there jobs .500 plus workers now sacked.
birds eye hessle road never did i think that one day i would actually get to drive at the place where my mum worked for 36 yrs ,sadly she never saw me driving there but plenty of my mums work mates and friends saw me hit the gate oops( i put that down too only having my liscence 3 days ) scunthorpe /hams hall and that dreaded bay at tescos doncaster thanks too the fellas who helped me that night i remember the one bit of advice i did get when struggling to reverse on the bay from one old guy was sod everyone else take your time when i eventually got it on the bay he said well done now pull forwards so i can undo your rear doors
im sure there must be one or two on here that have driven from or too birds eye hessle rd hull.
At least some of the jobs are staying in Britain and the other are going to Germany they must be the first UK company not to move production to Eastern Europe, Mind you its probably because the Eastern Europeans are over here and probably working the factorys anyway.

used to load out of Birds Eye Hull pretty regular roudabout 1985 to 1992 when i was on for Frigoscandia out of the London depot. When the pea season was on we used to take them to Christian Salvesens at Lowestoft (Oulton Broad )Is the cold store still there
what i used to drive when i was on Frigos
cheers Bob.
Jammy,Birds Eye or Permira as the owners are called do have product made in the old Eastern Bloc.
Just see the queue of Poles bringing Birds Eye products and the Hungarians bringing the Walls ice lollies into Hams Hall.Security used to love them coming in the Yard,
It seems like the closure is of the fish processing plant. The pea job was owned and run by the farmers who shared the costs of the viners and supplied the drivers.
Anyone with a cold store can freeze peas.
I cant imagine Yellow group running a fleet of D series Fords to the fatherland

Yes mate, last time I was in there was about 2 years ago, with a fridge. I did peas and beans into Oulton Broad in the late 80’s, but most that we did, went to Frigo’s at Lynn. Would do the odd load of spuds into the Birds Eyes Lowestoft plant up til around 4 years ago. Allways a fresh bags of chips, after the fry test
Bloody shame about the Hull plant, I expect that alot of the workers will have been there for a lot of years, and this sort of thing, may just hasten their retirement.
