There is a recent question on another drivers forum I am on the person is asking how he can get out of his contract with Big Freight anyone have any suggestions. He is quite new and is worried about the 3500 he would have to pay for training.
My suggestion would be to drive his truck into Tom’s office but that would ruin the grass.
$3500, for what? Training costs? If so and he signed the contract, well he’s got no option, if they want their money, he’s got to pay it, that’s why they put it in the contract after all
If he has recieved a driving licence and got some experience through BFS, well it’s value for money, all the things I will and do say about BFS are not exactly complimentary, sure I had my issues, but I would still recommend them, some will end up with the same opinion as me and many others, some will like it, again like many others, but even though their training has some bad points, it still gets you a class one licence, I can’t see anything wrong with them charging anybody for that at all
3500 did sound a bit steep and they said already drove before BFS
Is the driver an immigrant or Canadian? And if the driver had a full class 1 licence before starting with BFS then the only training received would have been company orientation which is paid as company time.
If the driver was put through the test by the company then put through other training, although I can only think of one programme for training and don’t think it operates in MB, then they should come to an agreement with the company and pay some of it, but $3500 sounds a bit of a rip off to me… That would make inflation over the past 5 years something like 500%…
Company training is done on payroll. There is no argument about that. Tell the driver to take a week off between pay periods then get his cheque and scarper. Not that I would ever encourage anything like that…

As a Federally Mandated company the contract is not worth the paper it is written on and I quote from Canada Labour Board. The contract is a generalisation and cannot be used to deduct money when the company feels fit. To be able to do this the company needs to provide employees with specifics.
As a federal company there is also no legal requirement for the company to provide contracts or employees to sign them and there is also no legal requirement to give notice.
Get your friend to write to BFS and ask for a breakdown in the training costs, if it was for the benefit of the company they cant charge!!
Apparently he is one of the new drivers that went out with another driver for a period of time for training already had a 1a licence just no real experience with long haul. The 3500.00 is apparently the training cost, dont know what they paid for milage havent heard from his girl friend for a bit.
