What’s it like? Wages hrs etc as I’m thinking of leaving my 6 drops a night no traffic but no life current job for this
I worked for the MK Depot from 2003-2011 & it was job n knock guaranteed 45 hours, overtime for anything over 9 hours a day, as far as I know most commercial depots run a bonus scheme, I was on a fixed bonus £25 per day (£125 per week) I used to work most bank holidays at double time + had the choice of day off or paid, so I took the money & could achieve around £250 & only do 4 to 6 hours work (yummy).
I was clearing between £500-£600 a week after all stoppages including pension (they were paying in about 3 times as much as me)
Roll ons paid the best bonus in our depot, followed by FEL’s then Dustcarts & Skips.
Skips are horrible, loads more messing about than Roll Ons & they do most of the sewage work (yuk)
Roll ons are easy, once you get used to them (carry a big a sledge hammer to knock the pins in on the paka’s, a crow bar, because they are useful & an adjustable spanner to remove temporary fencing)
FEL’s (front end loader) are easy, (sit in the cab whilst it does the work for you) as long as it’s routed properly (sometimes you need to tip more than once a day & it’s a pain if it takes you an hour back & forth)
Dustcarts are the most physical & most demanding for getting into tight spaces/shops (except for the odd household skip job) in & out all day with up to around 100 bins (between 40 & 60 customers, if I remember rightly)
Each depot is slightly different, some seem happy others are as miserable as sin, MK was an ‘inbetweeny’ half the drivers were ok, the other half were a waste of space, we had one shop steward who would do everything he could to put a spanner in the works & he had a little gang behind him, forever threatening to work to rule & to block the gates 70’s stylie for the most pettyist of reasons, didn’t like anybody doing ‘overtime for the company’ & bettering them selves (actually made my life hell, I was Forman/Trainer, so was a prime target) never mind, it paid my house off & I’ve got £30,000 worth of Severn Trent Shares to show for it !
Don’t cut any corners or rush around, do it by the book or it will bite you in the arse !
I’d still be there now if it wasn’t for my little accident, which was caused by someone leaving a hand break off & me rushing around on a Monday morning without any help from my colleagues.
If it’s a household waste depot, I don’t know how it works, but would assume it’s like any other council contract & not the best of jobs.
All in all, I found them a good company to work for.
Thanks Martin I’ve sent you a pm
It’s rubbish.
Were I am Fleet Engineers for a hire out fit, we rent lots of trucks to Biffa and the EX Shanks Waste 63 plates paint into Biffa are ours.

Yeah, literally. It might be manually sorting through other people’s rubbish to split it up for recycling, in between the vehicle movements. Find out exactly what you’re doing before you say yes, if you don’t like dirty jobs. I prefer long hours to getting my hands dirty.
Honestly don’t do it, it used to be a good job but has gone majorly downhill recently
