Well considering that many of us on the site could give you between 20 and 30 years plus you are still a mere lad “Jakey” but don’t “take a powder” it’s only a bit of “craic” But lets just look at the facts,40 years ago I was running a dozen or so Atky Borderers and what were you doing ? I would hazzard a guess that you may have been running around the school playground pulling a wooden motor along on a bit of string with one hand and a lump of ginger cake in the other Cheers Bewick.
If he’s still wet behind the ears, I must still be [zb] Yellow!
No ! it’s what is between your ears “dew”,but in your case you are probably sat on yours eh! Cheers Dennis.
Now bewick, back around 1980~85 I used to see an mk 2 atki regular away about carnforth up and down to R O warehouse, did the driver come from wray, coach wheel trims,he kept it very tidy, any pics…
I am more a ‘lurker’ than a ‘poster’ but I have to say on an interesting forum this thread is outstanding, possibly because I have driven variants of just about all the motors on here in my driving life (1965-2010), but mainly because it is by a ‘been there done that’ person, thanks Mr Bewick and keep 'em coming.

OJM 480L,in it’s final years it ran daily between ROH,Carnforth, and the paper mill at Beetham with 5 or 6 loads of woodpulp a day, the driver was a lad called Keith Sykes a.k.a. “Cyclone” he had come to work at Bewick Transport from S.J.Bargh and was a great shunter for us.He left us eventually to run his own Building business, which I believe he still operates from his home in Wray. There is a shot further back on this thread of OJM 480L when it finally was withdrawn from service, but it sure was one great workhorse for us and boy could it pull as well as pick it’s feet up when asked to Cheers Bewick.

Thanks for the kind coment “Mr Jake” I’m pleased the old photos are of interest, more so of course when you have “been there” and driven them, great days they sure were. Cheers Bewick.
A Bewick Atki, stood at Hockliffe on the A5 fully freighted with a load of Morecambe bay seawashed turf which would have been one of three loads required to re-lay a bowling green somewhere in the S. East of England.
Never knew you ran any tipping trailers Dennis and whats going on with the coach trims on the Atki?
Hiya “ramone”,we did run a couple of tippers in the early/mid 70’s mainly on Pig iron,Coal, frag scrap and some animal feed but they didn’t mix well with our flat traffic so I eventually sold the trailers which were fleet nos. 35 & 36 IIRC one was a Peak chassis and the other was a Crane/F and both had Millmoor bodies and Briggs and Stratton 16 hp petrol donkey engines. The Atki parked further back was the first unit (MEC 98K) we sent down to run from Gravesend and Len Valsler was the first driver,he must have been up at Milnthorpe when I took this shot.Cheers Dennis.
Everyone to their own Dennis but i think i`d prefer the Atki on the left

But the one on the right was a nicer motor, with or without the bling,it was a nice smooth runner and a touch higher geared as well,Cheers Dennis.
Evening Dennis you,ve got a great thread going on here,i remember seeing your motors up and down the road always well turned out ,as they a proper job, keep the photos coming by by the way is it my memory or did i once see an iveco horse box at kendal trooting track in your colour.
Cheers Richard.
Ive just seen a new advertisement on tv Dennis , Eddie Stobart trucking songs a triple cd , i just wondered if youd have considered doing something similar when you were running Bewicks ? Seriously how much more commercial can this outfit get ,i`m sure there could be a few suggestions to what songs should be on it.
Reading some comments on the RR engines you made last night ,did you ever run any or were you warned off them?

i just hope that you havn’t added the “fast eddie” cd to your collection “ramone”,dear oh! dear what next will those hero’s come up with! Anyway,RR Eagle 220,yes we aquired one when I bought out K.Fell & co/J.B.Hudson ltd.We ran it for a while but it was never going to survive in the Bewick group,it was just a noisey, thirsty piece of crap so it’s days were numbered from day one Cheers Dennis.i782.photobucket.com/albums/yy11 … 80742a.jpg

Hiya Richard, thanks for the kind coment,I don’t think you ever saw our Iveco at Kendal Raceway as I stopped running my horses there in the very early 80’s and I didn’t buy that motor until '89,you will have seen it at York,Tir Prince, Lanark and Appleby and once at Musselburgh. But the Kendal track was crap, far too hard and I valued my horses too much to run on that surface.Cheers Dennis.i782.photobucket.com/albums/yy11 … 02b994.jpg

How did that driver get away with roping over a flysheet Dennis,I bet the air was blue in the Traffic Office when you spotted that, perhaps even a P45 being proffered !!!
I did explain in an earlier post about fly sheeting the loads of turf David,we needed to keep the rain out of it because the loads were like sponges.Somtimes it had been raining the trailers would come back from the marsh with water running out of them like a river.Once they had stood over night they had shed a ton or two of water and what we didn’t want was them gaining further if it was raining at the time, which it often was ! The best way of sheeting the loads was to use the PVC fly sheet. The turf was sold by the square yard not weight, three loads to the bowling green but once we started using the tri axles in 1983 overloading became less of a problem on the turf traffic.Cheers Dennis.

I would have thought that the fly sheet would also protect the load ,once on the road the wind would play havoc with the turf

No Dennis i wont be buying the cd but if you put ramones into you tube you will see how bad my taste is in music ,anyway back to the subject, what was the RR like compared with the ■■■■■■■ and gardners performance wise ,ie get up and go could they pull?

Morning Dennis, yes thats the motor in the photo as i remember it i took a shot of it myself i,ll have to dig it out.We ran an iveco turbo star at the time.It was my dad who ran the trotters and i looked after the wagons and just occasionally we,d go and watch him race if we had time so like you say it was somewere else i saw your wagon ,nice motor though, by the way why an iveco did you run them on your fleet? If i remember dad used to go t
o see a bloke called arthur slack up your way and one of our horses was sly direction i think.anyway enough about horses keep the photos .coming
Regards Richard.
Hiya Richard,I know “Slacky”, his daughter Diane drove some of our horses for a couple of years. This is a shot of me with Dalechief at York in 1989 where he’d just won a two year old race,he went on to win the National Pacing Derby at Tir Prince the following year.Cheers Dennis.
