Bethesda Quarries

Hi all…

I recall loading slate from here ( well, what else  ) in 1976. It was a regular collection at the time. I’m pretty sure they were export loads for France but can’t recall actually tipping one, but Ido remember the long drag back to Southampton in a Mandator with 20 ton plus…
Does anyone recall loading there , particularly for export. I see from Dr G that they still operate…

Cheers now.
Baldrick.

hi used to load crated penrhyn slate there for clydesdale roofing supplies colwyn bay on an iveco 180e18 hiab wagon always seemed to be raining !

Thanks Gaz for the reply…
The only one, but sadly no prize for ya.
Funny enough , when I was thinking about the place , the rain was the first thing I remembered!
But I guess, like where I live now surrounded by lakes and mountains it’ll never be far away.
Cheers now.

Was Bethesda where you got plum slate? If i remember rightly the weighbridge operator had an unhealthy obsession with Vanessa Paradis

Ha ha! I don’t know happysack but that made me laugh!
Funny old lot the weighbridge boys!

Hello Baldrick.
We use to take bagged green granite down to Permanite at Hertford in the 60s/70s from the Welsh Slate quarries.
Usually 10ton loads all handball and yes the one time I went in it was (slating) :frowning: it down.
But time has taken its toll and I cannot remember which quarry, only having to keep the ropes out of that green mud. Mike.

Two shades of plum- can’t say which particular hole delivered which. There was also some superb green slate that came from there too. If you are lucky, you can find bits of purple slate with round green blobs in it, maybe 1" in diameter.

Green granite used to be quarried at Arenig, between Bala and Trawsfynydd, but the quarry has long ceased to produce stone. There is also a green granite quarry at Tonfanau, on the coast between Aberdovey and Barmouth. I think they still sell the odd load of roadstone.

I like stone, me.
