Best way to Whitehaven

Hi guys
im off to Whitehaven early tomorrow morning and i was wondering the best way to get there.
im gonna be travelling from down south up the M6.
The last time i was up that way a couple of years ago i went to Eskmeals.
I got off at J36 M6 followed the A590 towards Barrow , turned right on the A5092 , onto the A595 and up the coast.
It was a bit of a mission in a Artic to be honest. Is that the best way to go or can any of you local lads point me to a better way?

many thanks

I would always use the M6 / A66 even if it is 10 miles further

come off at penrith turn left follow signs

go the scenic route through the lakes and tip on tues

tip tues if your load still intact

Thanks for the replies.
ive never been in that direction on the A66 before so wasnt sure what it was like.
Thats tomorrow sorted.
cheers guys.

Go to J40 on M6 then left onto A66 which takes you straight through to Whitehaven. Don’t even think about coming off at J36. We go to Cockermouth several times throughout the day and night and none of our drivers would ever consider cutting across, its bad enough in a car let alone an artic. A66 is a good road with plenty of lay bys if you need to stop, but just watch your speed plod does get along there. Enjoy the scenery its beautiful on a nice day.

BigBear.

I work for a firm at Milnthorpe near Kendal and if we ever do loads near Whitehaven we go up to Penrith then across the A66 theres a few decent dual carriageways on it. Im from Dalton in Furness near Barrow and there is a few steep clicks up the coast, especially at Muncaster and as you know the road from the A590 through to Millom can be a nightmare. I think ■■■■■■■ must be the only county where main roads go through farm yards  . T.Bradys from Barrow used to go to Marchon from Barrow up the coast and some lads would struggle going up Muncaster with the early EPS mercs they had.

I agree up the M6 to Penrith then the A66, HGV’s are not allowed to travel through the Lakes, I would avoid the Coast Road.

Watch out for the average speed cameras along by Bassenthwaite lake.

M6/A66.

Used to do Whitehaven regularly, and we got banned from going from there to Barrow via the coast road as it was classed as too dangerous.

Ken.

The motorway signs tell you to use the A66 and to be honest its far easier and less stressfull going that way.Get some idiots in cars on there if you stick to 40 but they will learn to be patient the hard way!

Are these the ones in the 50 zone dual carriageway, after people have been stuck behind you at 40 along the single carriageway for ages…

Not a money making scheme that is it??

I stick at 40 through the dual too, let people get past and on their way

Jack-knife:
come off at penrith turn left follow signs

Thats the same way i always went, from barrow up the coast a deffinate NO GO.

Thanks for all your replies and points of view

Like i said, i did the coast road a year or 2 ago in an empty artic because i didnt know any better and the route looked ok on the map! but as a few of you know, its a bit of a character builder to say the least :open_mouth: so i thought i`d ask for some advice before i went again, for all i knew the A66 could of been a rollercoaster ride as well.

so,i took the A66 today and it was a breeze with some amazing scenery.stuck to a steady 40 ish most the way much to the annoyance of some the kamikazi car pilots.they need to relax a bit and take in the scenery…before they slip up and become part of it

thanks again gents

I remember going to Marchon Whitehaven the first time in 1970 and wished I had asked someone the way.
I went from Shell Stanow via Milnthorpe, Lindale (before the bypass),Greenodd, Broughton in Furness, Muncaster and Egremont in a Scammell artic tanker, luckily I was empty and going to pick up Dobanic acid for Pumpherston.
All the local drivers hanging around the mess room at Marchon had a good laugh at my expense but soon put me right.
After that it was always via the A66 from Penrith and the road improved a great deal in later years.
We had about 6 tankers based up at Marchon, which was later called Albright and Wilson, in the 80’s and 90’s. There were some decent tanker firms and drivers working out of the place once over but now it is waste land.

I only did the scenic route once and it was in a 7.5t I always remembered the ditty Mary went to Work in Whitehaven to keep me on the straight and narrow, so my last drop was in Whitehaven and I decided to follow my nose and an old map. I thought that road would never end, and I then made the mistake of coming back over Ingleton, Skipton, Leeds to East Yorkshire. It was a long time ago

If I where coming off from down south
I would come off at juntion 36 (kendal south) and head towards kendal on the bypass
Go all the way till the end of the bypass and follow the sings for windermere ambleside and grasemre keswick
Thats the A591
Just follow the 591 from kendal all the way till you get to the A66 in Keswick and then it stright onto cockermouth
At cockermouth follow the A595 to Whitehaven, I would not bother going though frizington though
That way you dont have to go round the ■■■■■ coast which is a long drag

I went to Keswick that way in my car last year and I am sure there is a weight limit after Grasmere .
We delivered sulphuric acid to a water treatment plant which was half way up Dunmail rise and one of our drivers was stopped by the law for going past the weight limit sign, he showed his delivery note and was let through.

M6 to the A66 is the only way now with a HGV.
We did Whitehaven, Workington, and even the nuclear power station at Seascale and always went up and across.

Yep, there’s weight limits and roads that are not advised for HGV’s… Funnily though, the A595 coast road that people complain about is listed as a preferred route :unamused:
