As I’m soon to dump the van in favour of a big boys truck what would be the best tractor unit to do my first year in ?
Are you getting a choice then?
A knackered DAF CF with the foam hanging out of it’s seat.
You’re lucky to even be considered for Jedi Class 1 status.

No just asking what peoples thoughts are
I will get a 63 plt IVECO which will already be beaten and battered
When it comes to class 1 driving when you have no experience and the ink on your license is still wet, be grateful you get the keys to anything at all. Some people wait months, even years, for someone to give them a chance.
Take what you get and learn with it. There is no “best” unit to learn in. Once youre out on your own, while its not exactly rocket scince, its not as easy as some on here would have you believe and is a whole other ball game than when your training. Especially when you rock up to a delivery point and get pointed to a bay thats a blindside reverse with poles either side, pallets and bricks dumped opposite and its pouring with rain. No truck is better than another for dealing with that
Mine was a Volvo F86 to start with, luckily I soon got an F7 to replace it LOL.

My thoughts exactly , I’d rather have the worst truck in the yard than the best because then I don’t get a shock if I have to drive some thing as bad
I had an Austrian steyer, one of the best trucks I ever drove, very powerful[before the limiters came in,early 1990]
Most places where I have worked it has been policy to give the new boy the oldest available unit in the yard, and TBH if you have just passed would rather have one that already has a few marks on it as being a newbie you will surely put one or two more on it and better that than putting the first mark on a new unit
To be fair I don’t mind the stralis, so long as it’s from this decade. They aren’t a bad place to start. The gearbox isn’t the best, but then neither is the mercy.
If I could choose a unit, that’s a difficult question as I’ve always driven what comes my way, but I must say I’m quite partial to the Renault T, as I like being closer to the ground and I found the bunk comfortable. Plenty of storage too if specced with rear mounted cupboards.

I will be learning in a DAF with the lovely not autobox so a Strallis will be child’s play

It will indeed. I wish you luck with your move up to the big league mate.
Just don’t forget that it bends!

Ha! You’ll only do it once! I learnt that lesson early on, uncoupled, got distracted by the boss asking a question and pulled out much further than the split couple I’d intended. Ping ping ping they went. Oops!

Daf and Iveco both use the astronic.
As for a 1st lorry, use what your given, prove yourself worthy, then you will get a better one.
