Thanks for that Dean, greatly appreciated. I’ve been looking for photos to post on here and one company that used to be on the side of the A1 at sandy has eluded me so if you have any on your vast collection I would appreciate it. Darlows, from memory they had red cabs, I think they relocated to Peterborough but not totally sure about that.

Have made a note of Darlow’s. Do you know what make of truck they run Kempston ?

Here’s E.Hull’s Foden from 1966.

Some photos here of S. A. Smith Heavy Haulage from Biggleswade, don’t know much about this firm, they seem to have grown very quickly and have some nice equipment. Nmp.

Worked for Kings for a whole two weeks some years ago, they were trading under the name of S&H King and did a lot of continental work and had a lot of second hand white merc artics, also did a bit of brick and block work, I can honestly say it’s a relief to the transport industry that these are no longer in business, I could write a book on happenings during my two weeks there. What finally did it for me was me asked to sign vehicle service sheets off for vehicles that hadn’t been serviced. Nmp

I was only there for two weeks but I have honestly never seen so many drivers come and go, one came in one day and asked if there was any jobs going, Stephen king said can you go to Spain tomorrow and that was the end of the interview process  next day he turned up went off to Spain, two or three days later they couldn’t get hold of him and after a while there was a phone call from the Spanish authorities regarding the lorry being abandoned, he’d used it to get to Spain and literally just buggered off leaving the lorry loaded where it sat!

Some old photos of K & D’s of Bedford, couple of the photos are very clear unfortunately. I can remember these really well, they used to do a lot of blocks for c.a.e.c. Howard’s and stillage work for Georg Fischer castings. Nmp. Edit, I can remember them having quite a few ERF A series but haven’t been able to find any photos of them.

Kempston…Those Foden lorries of K & D used to make a high pitched noise coming up Cauldwell St and St Johns St… when I worked in Cauldwell St / St Marys…

Couple of oldies here, no idea where there yard would’ve been in kempston, I’ve tried to find out without any joy, long gone now, no idea if they are still in the Hemel area, I used to know of a Masters near Kings Langley and presume it’s the same firm.

One of you old motors Kempston,
