Probably upwards of 200 lorries in the marston vale plus subbies, here’s a photo of the ridgmont depot which has particularly fond memories for me, as a child I used to go out at every opportunity possible with my dads mate who drove there, best paying job around Bedford by a mile and great memories for me. You couldn’t go past a transport cafe anywhere around the south without there being at least half a dozen brick lorries in there.

Nice pics “Kempston” I wonder what a typical days production of bricks was to keep a fleet that large going ■■

It must have been an unbelievable amount Dean, the photo you posted is the actual lorry I used to go out in with my dads mate. Here’s a few more photos (not brilliant) I took myself on a pretty crap camera. I’ll also post the AEC Mammoth Major he drove before having the Foden. That one isn’t my photo.

I assume that this was all hand ball on and off at the delivery point?
No wonder people where much fitter in the old days…

Yes all handball shunt but if you had a good bunch of blokes on site it’s surprising how quickly they tipped it and of course if the driver helped there was always a decent ‘drink ‘ in it for him. They usually tipped one side of the load first then turned the lorry round and tipped the other side.

Thanks for these pictures Kempston. Carnt make out the last number on the FH pulling the box van, it was either my old one or its sister unit. It doesnt look like me driving it. Used to pull them box vans on Debenhams or 3m’s contract.

Whilst we are on bricks & blocks… P.D Izzard of Maulden - my mate Martin at the wheel.
The crane makes life a bit easier these days…

SHUNT1986:
Terry Fossey of Clophill, was a nice truck until dad plowed a field with it! - complete write off
T45 roadtrain was the courtesy vehicle i believe!

Blimey, that’s a blast from the past

The Fossey brothers were the golden boys of Autocontex.

Me old dad used to sub for them at the same time and one of the fosseys when being handed over the notes in Harwich said, oh I can’t possibly go to fords at Halewood. My wife has pork chops tonight…

Me dad, quickly said, I’ll go… we’ve got beans on toast…

Which of the brothers always wore a hat ?

The yellow Foden is one of Smiths that used to be based in Bedford and for whom I was transport manager, this photo which isn’t mine shows the Foden parked in Stoke on Trent where this one was based due to a national contract with a white goods manufacturer that had a large factory there. The company sold out to EMR a number of years ago. I have some photos of my own somewhere but having moved house a couple of months ago I can’t find anything at the moment even if they haven’t been thrown away. We had a nice fleet mainly Fodens which I absolutely love.

Hi Tubby,

They were indeed the golden boys, my dad still drives he is about 63 now and over the last 40 odd years working for Terry was probably his favorite job, they remained good friends until terry unfortunately passed away 10+ years ago.

I dont recall Terry in a hat so could only assume it was Richard that wore the hat!

was your Dad a subbie? do you have any pics of his motor?

A few pics here from a Bedfordshire resident of some of his past motors, he’s a good mate of mine and has been all over the E.U. in his time. Enjoy

Some photos of Wildmans Transport (nmp) who were based in kempston, they were taken over by NMT crane hire a few years ago but sadly no longer around. A good company in its day, not the highest payers in the world but treated everyone well and didn’t overwork the drivers. They also had a scania low loader but I’ve not been able to find any photos of that.
