No nearside wiper or mirror let alone other frivolities like radios, heaters and power steering.

It doesn’t seem that long ago when Eberspacher adverts were in most truck magazines let alone having an FM radio. Analogue radios .with knobs, buttons and manual tuning. Then there was the gearboxes…. EPS, Twin Splitter and Roadranger or ZF boxes in DAFs, Mercs and Renaults were to operate the range change, the gear lever was knocked through a gate.

It’s hard to imagine driving something like these without a near side mirror let alone a near side wiper,

Traffic in those day was pro-rata quieter and was not full of drivers other than British Driving Licence holders, who think every car needs to drive at the top of the speed dials, and that they just own the road they are driving on at that time, likewise cyclists just got on their bikes and rode properly. Road sense n Safety was paramount in every drivers head, otherwise us oldies would never had made it to here today writing answers, lol.

I remember most of these vehicles when I was an apprentice mechanic, we spent time at both Marston Valley workshops & London Brick at Stewartby, learning about these vehicles.
Regards
Andy

My father drove a Foden FG for Thermalite and they fitted a nearside mirror for him, he used to take his dad occasionally as a passenger and he used to alter the mirror setting so that HE could see which wasn’t much help to dad! :unamused:

Pete.

Pete,a great memory jogger, when I joined Tommy Keogh’s as second man to George on heavy haulage, that was exactly what I got my knuckles wrapped for, adjusting the offside mirror for my benefit,George went wild as the vibration in the old Foden cab used to cause the mirror to move,George had set it just right with a screw to secure, until I caused the screw to drop out, never lived that day down,on our way to Wylva power station with some Dorman Long steel roof trusses from Trafford Park,push-pull with Danny and Chris Bennett in the push Foden, great days!

They have a depot off Cambridge Road in Bedford now, just behind the new Whistle distribution centre.

M & R was run by Julian Measures and Paul Reilly, Julian being at Blackburn Hall Farm. Manor Farm and Storage is run by the Reilly’s.
Nearby is Tesco Ted who had and may still operate a fleet of tippers. He also had a collection of traction engines as well!

My dad worked with Paul Reillys brother at wincanton in the garage, he went on to drive an artic tipper for whitmores,
One of the drivers at shanks who I was mates with used to do a bit for Tesco Ted, his wife looked after his horses.

They did alot of Bedford parts and were a good company to deal with.

Advert from 1979.

Still going strong Dean though the land must be worth a fortune so how long for who knows? I used to go in there for Shanks, got on really well with them and they used to look after me very well at Xmas time

They had a yard in Bond Ave on the corner of Bletcham Way If I remember rightly, distributing IPC magazines.
They took over the IPC work from A C Biggs of Leighton Buzzard.
