brookie:
Anyone ever do European or M/E in a Bedford TM? Bet you’ve got some pics bubbleman!
Cheers all,
brookie
Somebody did do Middle East in a TM in the 80s. If you look on The Flying Foden’s thread Old Stoke Companies there is a photo posted by
Rob Campbell of I think a TM with an Aircon unit.
Regards Steve.
I used to meet a guy at regular intervals,(Usually at the Hotel National) who was an O/D with a TM,Detroit diesel. This would be in the late '70’s.
I think the unit was dark green but can’t for the life of me remember the guy’s name.He thought the motor was the dog’s danglies.
V8 Passion:
dos anyone remember seeing a tm that had a axle fitted between the 1st axle and the diesel tanks,
Do you mean this one? Wonder if anyone has any history on the truck/driver .There was a thread going a while back about Hercocks .It is a rear animal though.
Did HM customs have the illuminated headboard out ?
Davnic:
TM’s were the first artics i drove, for Cooks of Cornwall,in 1993 after passing my test.
They ran four,an L10 250bhp,two 14litre 290’s and a 14litre 370.
I did local work for them and changeovers at Gordano.
I never got to drive the 370,but at twenty one years old and before speed limiters had arrived, perhaps it was just aswell.
Davnic,
Was that Cooks of Hayle ■■ - Used to run with them in mid to late 80’s when we used to do the spud bulkers off Lands End for Walkers Crisps - Leicester, they had TM’s, also ran with the Oates boys from Penzance, are they still going ■■

Yes Ant,It was Cooks of Hayle, cream and brown with orange lettering.
Sadly no longer running,Hirvine Cook passed away 2001/02 and one of his sons continued running lorries (D.W.Cook-Transport,white Strato units) until a couple of years ago when his main customer,an engineering co. moved operations to the midlands.
He then ran a 3.5t Sprinter and a 7.5t MAN on “hotshot” work for the M.O.D out of RNAS Culdrose, carrying aircraft engines etc. until late last year when poor health forced the decision to pack up altogther.
Dennis Oates are still running, virtually 100% fridges,on fish from Newlyn and supermarket work for a meat packing company.
When i left school,1988,my first job was drivers mate and general dogsbody with West Cornwall Storage and Distribution, who ran green and red ERF’s on much the same work as Cooks,Oates,Chris Miners,Aldridges etc.
Do you remember WCSD?
Hi Davnic,
Don’t remember WCSD, but all the others I remember running with - forgot about Chris Miners !! - Seem to remembr a lad named Kevin I think (memories going now) on one of the TMs for Cooks.
We used to base ourselves on Trewent Truckstop (Texeco) Rods, boy - had some drunken night’s on there in Rods little bar at the back and in the Jamaca Inn down the road - good times on the spud job.
Do you have any photo’s of the Cornish bigade trucks - used to have some but they got destoyed by a bitter ex wife !!!
Regards
Ant
Don’t remember a Kevin mate.
Chris Bolton,Paul Hendra,Mike Dunstan,Derek ?,Shaun and David Cook were there around that time.
You mentioned Trewint, did you ever use Lewdown, that is where everyone used to stop on the way up as London and Midlands could then be done in one hit.
I do have photos mate,of WCSD and Cooks TM’s but i’m afraid i don’t know how to post them.I don’t mind lending them to anyone that can post as long as they’re returned safe.
There was a Kevin that drove for Baileys (orange Roadtrains) i think, again doing the same work.

I’m not 100% certain but I think the wagon came from Kirkby Central at North Anston Sheffield who were the GM agents back in the 70s and 80s. When I worked for Glass Glover we had a TM3800 on demo from them in the early 80s and I think that motor was in their yard but in GM livery and only two axles.WE is a Sheffield reg and X would be 1982 IIRC. Whatever,it looks a handy tool.
Hi The Bedford TM that I was asking about has just been posted bu Bubbleman on page 23 If you look closely it looks as if the exhaust goes through the roof spoiler, but it must be an illusion because it looks like the same truck that Ash has posted.
