Bedford tk & km

Does anyone remember the Spanish “Telma” retarders, the trailers used an Albion axle or such like with an electromagnetic brake on the diff

Weren’t they quite common on coaches (mid 70s?)? I have a vague memory of seeing the logo on the back of Plaxton Panorama Bedfords and Fords.

The Telma retarder on a coach did work on the transmission, but these on the Spanish trailers were just a diff with no drive to it. well except from the wheels obviously.

The same furniture guy i cant remember his name but he got stiched up by his wife and and her new fella and ended his days living in a km furniture truck on a piece of land in the middle of parkstone in poole, until he was carted off to an old peoples home unable to care for himself only thing he owned was the truck which by then was just a scrapper.

Zetorpilot:
I remember driving the occasional TK on agency work in the late 80’s. I remember having to lift my left elbow when changing gear in order to avoid painfully hitting something - could it have been an oddly placed handbrake valve?? This was one of my least favourite trucks to drive, up there (should that be “down there”?) with the awful Cargo and appalling Leyland Roadtrain.

At least one TK has made it to Finland; I drive past one rotting in the bushes almost every day. It’s the only one I’ve seen in over 15 years here.

atleast about thousnds reached finland it whas market leader in finland from fifties to 72 when the groosweiht rised from 12 to 16 ton and 3 axle 17,5 to 22 and then the sweeds and our own sisu and vanaja
which where heavier built could compear. the moust off bedfords where drived down in a short time and became tractorwagons for agriculture. was 4 years old when used to bee "driving whit a j6 .

I drove a few Bedfords & my choice was the old S type with a comet engine, in my opinion when they moved on to the TK. & KMs they never seemed to get the gearing right, of course this is just my opinion, I only ever owned one & it was a KM. with a 460 Bedford engine & a single speed axle, what a let down this was, the gearing was useless, & access to the engine was a joke, we ran it 10 months & replaced it with a Leyland Clydesdale which had a better payload, & much better on fuel, & a tilt cab, Regards Larry.

Larry, would that be the whistling Leyland engine in the S type? Used to love the sound they made, good choice, good motor.

Ossie

Aye, a great motor plus the 2 speed, and good brakes, but not the best for cabbing it Eh, Regards Larry.

I’ve got an old Trucking mag from around '96 in which Smiths of Gloucester had Renault Maxters with them fitted. If I remember, there was about a 200kg payload penalty with them but Smiths were working on the Brockworth bypass (A417) at the time upto the Air Balloon so they would’ve been appreciated for that…

Join the club, I went over Shap [A6] & started to get stiff, Regards Larry.

Now that’s taking your imagination to the extreme,……well maybe not.

I had a KM with the 466 engine in,also a two speed axle which went very well.Only thing I didn’t like was the lack of headroom in them or in the TK’s.
Cheers Dave.

Its true & Im 76, Well once a wagon driver allways a wagon driver, but of course it might of been the cold icy conditions on Shap, One can enjoy ones younger days & nights of course & have a good laugh Eh, but we are still here & that cant be bad can it, Im just having a few whiskys before I turn in & hope Im doing the same the morrow night, I have plenty of stock to go at, Regards Larry.
