Our firm has several rigid car transporters with spec lifts on the back.
One of our lads was chatting to a chap from another firm (with similar wagons) who got done by VOSA today for towing a car with no MOT on spec. His ■■■ was busted for £100 (no points though).
WE checked it and although the copper/VOSA pigs were incredibly sad to do him for it, they were technically in the right
Because the car becomes a “trailer”, it needs to be tested. Amazing but true.
So…if you use a spec lift, make sure the car has an MOT!
I really do think some of these buffoons should get proper jobs you know!

Blimey!! What about all the ■■■■■■ takin the scrap cars to scrap yards hangin off the back of a Harvey Frost or Spec?
I don’t think the Road Traffic Act applies to TGB’s (Thieving Gypsy B…ds), Private hire drivers, tipper drivers, anyone in a van, sales reps, anyone in a Mondeo or coppers/VOSA pigs. The rest of us get jumped on for having a bulb out etc

Are you sure thats right? A towed car is exactly just that and not a trailer. How come caravans and tent trailers don’t have an MOT, or do they now?
All towed trailers/caravans have to be roadworthy by law but there is no requirement to be MoT’d or tested in any way in fact.
As for the spec lift issue maybe its slightly different as its pulled by a goods vehicle (just a guess dont all get your knickers in a twist if im wrong)
The way I understand it is if you need to tow a car without an MOT it needs to be on a trailer with NONE of it’s wheels on the road. If it’s in contact with the road itself it needs an MOT.

car dont need a mot if on a suspended spec lift…NOT A full suspend just front wheels off the ground and as long as it has a light board on the back it does not need a mot or tax…also But I may be wrong trade plates allow you to move a vehicle with no mot or tax but what u cant do it go shopping or cruise about on trade plates…but if using a tow along A frame behind a car/4x4/van the car should have a mot and tax.and from what i have read it should be only short distance.

Trade plates only cover you for no tax. You still need mot
Trade plates can only be used on an untaxed or unregistered vehicle, to deliver it, demonstrate it to a prospective buyer or collect it from a customer for repair or resale. Carrying passengers, dogs and shopping for ■■■■ are not allowed with them.

Of all the piles of crap on the road that they could have a look at, is this really all they have to do?
