B&Q Agency advert pulled

theguardian.com/business/201 … on-swindon

I know it’s a warehouse job via agency but surely if it was a driving job expecting a free days ‘Induction’, the story would be the same.

Maybe the time has come to expose the end clients abusing these ‘Free Inductions’

The name and shame method seems to have worked this time.

The co-op get drivers to do a free assessment and induction before being offered a single shift, normally nothing comes of it and it turns out the agencies just want to build up a pool of inducted drivers for use when it goes ■■■■ up.

I never have nor will I ever do a days work for nothing.

+1
I never have either. I always read about people working through their lunch breaks, going in early, staying late etc because of the work load and not getting paid for it and I never understood the thinking behind it. “Oh it needs done and wont get done otherwise”. Well the company should employ more staff then. Halfords did that when I worked for them. Trimmed the staff right back and the other full timer who was in the cycle dept with me would say he only took a 15 minute break at the weekend because it was so busy and things like that. Me, I took my full hour plus my two 15 minute breaks. I never stayd past my finish time or started before my start time. Anyone who does unpaid overtime is actually making the situation worse because the company wont hire extra staff

well well, Wincanton, no one could have imagined that… :unamused:

Maybe if these big companies stopped all this bloody subcontracting and racing each other to the bottom, and, as with their own well paid well and pensioned senior management, direct employed again offering proper jobs…zzzzzz…sorry lads just slipped into a daydream there momentarily, normal service has resumed.

I got caught out for this on my first day at Waitrose…Went in there, only to find that “today will be an unpaid induction”. When I objected to “not being paid, because that would also mean I am uninsured”, I was deemed to have “failed the assessment” and was banned from site immediately.

Bugger Waitrose. They don’t want staff - they want slaves. :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp:

I was once to an Interview in the Swiss Alps. Was running then an Excavator.
Wasn’t successful as i had not enough experience in the Mountains. (Was mostly in muddy Rheinland working)
Hey,the Lad gave me Cash a Day Wages plus the Fuel for Traveling.
Now thats not just the Swiss.
Went to an Interview in the Midlands (Agency). No good there without Car. Called me a Taxi to bring me to ASDA in Lutterworth.
Same at MFS, Flowrite, Arla,UPS for Olympia,… Nowhere a loss for me,and everywhere helpful People and nice to Work for.

Could be worse Asprays in willenhall got a con going with the job centre they get drivers to pop along to an open day for drivers to be told…

“Right lads its 6 WEEKS with NO PAY just get your £72.40 a week job seekers it’s nights days or a mix” right who’s first to sign up?.

You might get an interview after if not they get more mugs for free for 6 weeks yeah right time to leave just after he sat down, like I was going to do that :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :stuck_out_tongue:

Jesus wept Daytrunker, is that for real.

We needs a sticky list of chancers spivs wide boys and con men at the top of the page, and there’s number one.

This seems to be abusing the system some what and ripping the ■■■■ by getting workers at the tax payers expense. Basically the tax payer is paying the salary (if it can even be called that!)
Ive never been on the dole so dont know for sure (maybe someone can correct me if im wrong) but am I right in thinking that anyone who gets sent to this company but decides “■■■■ that, im not doing 60 hours a week for £72” and declines it, then gets deemed to be not looking for work and has their dole stopped? There should be laws in place to stop the rules being taken advantage of to such an extent.
I’m all for getting scroungers off the dole if they’re not interested in working but refusing this would be totally understandable imo

Thats actually fairly common outside of the trucking world. There was a hoo-ha not so long ago with one of the supermarkets doing it and the scheme was supposed to have been stopped.

IMO,if the jobs there they should employ you.

Yep was real couldn’t believe it,told the job centre not happening and why, that was 2 years ago but they are a mile away from work and what we hear they got a scheme like it now running.

Aye and you get Cameron and his ■■■■■■■■ chums in the Tories puting jobs like these into the figures for low unemployment :unamused: con jobs like these plus the zero hours contracts.

I would never, ever do a day’s work unpaid.

They used to be big on unpaid work in Germany, but a lot of students used to do unpaid internships, and more often than not they’d get the call from the firm with an offer for a full-time job when they graduate. To me, that’s fair enough, but bloody B&Q!

The snides will twist and turn it to make it look like it’s a privilege to get such an “opportunity”. It’s the sort of attitude like; “You should be chuffed to bits you’ve got offered a job, you should be happy to do the first few days for free!” You know what it’s like, give an inch, and they’ll take a mile. They’ll be paying drivers for driving time only on their tachos next! Driver: “Ere boss, why’ve I only been paid for 25 hours, I did 60 hours last week?” Transport Manager: “We check your tacho and only pay you for hours driven now, new company policy. No more night-out allowance either, you drivers have had it easy for too long, time to get with the times! If you don’t like it, bugger-off to ■■■, they charge you for fuel if you get less than 7mpg!”

I remember reading about a fellow who worked for an engineering company for many years, and he was made redundant. He signed-on, and the Jobcentre insisted he do some unpaid “work experience” to keep himself “in work” and make him more attractive to employers. They sent him to his own firm, where they expected him to do his old job, unpaid! Absolutely insane!

The French had the right way of treating the bosses of these types of companies at the time of La Revolution:

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS.

So B&Q had no idea what was in the advert… believe that, you’ll believe anything, and Wincanton are working closely with B&Q and the agency… to make sure they don’t get caught again. I’m with the never work for nothing gang.

They’ll be paying drivers for driving time only on their tachos next! Driver:

Slightly different - but this sort of thing already happens to carers and people who work on Home care.

Only paid for the time they are actually attending to Service Users, not for the time worked whilst driving between calls, leading to people working 60 hours and only being paid for 40 for example, so it’s already happening!

Taking the p1ss doesn’t really cover it! Thank God I only have a few years to go and I’m done, just feel sorry for the young ones though.

This supposedly got stopped about three months ago after a court ruling saying it was illegal…But some dodgy companies are probably still try it on

Strange. Myself and plenty of others I know have done agency work there and all got paid for assessments…

a lot of the companies I supply don’t pay for the assessments - if you pass them I pay, yes it costs me and yes I also don’t think they should be unpaid - even if its paid after x shifts its better than not paid at all.

the drugs test on the other hand I totally agree with - if you know you have a drugs test and fail (I have seen and done these) you get asked if you have taken any meds etc. prior to the test.

I fail every drugs test :open_mouth:

Cocodamol is a perfect way to get you a week or two off work with full pay
