B+E licence holder , what can I tow legally with a 3.5 tonne Canter , I think the train weight is 7000KG thanks.
TOWING
The RECOMMENDATION for safety is that the trailer should be no more than 85% of the towing vehicle weight but there does not seem to be a legal maximum.
INFO SOURCE
Example of category B+E: Motor vehicle with a MAM up to 3,500 kg towing a trailer of any weight over 750 kg.

you will have to consider the tachograph as well
Driving Licence entitlement and whether the vehicle or combination of vehicles requires a tachograph to record driver’s hours. The latter will apply to most vehicles and combinations of vehicles above 3500kg gross weight where used for commercial purposes.

Good point Del - I’ll bet that this is for a commercial purpose…
With the trailer attatched at any point during the day, the tacho must be used all day.
No trailer attached all day then no tacho required.
I assume that if the trailer is suddenly required in a day when it was not expected to be used then manual entries would be required for the period leading up to it.■■?
Also at any time during the week (Mon 0000 to Sun 2400) if the tacho was used so that it comes under EU regs then a seperate record, easiest way is to use seperate tacho cards, for each of the non tacho days using a seperate card for each of those days with name, date, start & finish times on each.
Apparently, according to my info sources, in parts of the UK, VOSA are having a ‘field day’ with prosecutions for non compliance on the EU regs for such commercial vehicles when towing

As others have said you can tow just about anything you like (i.e. up to 3500kg which covers any normal trailer) but if it’s for commercial purposes you’ll need to use a tacho and abide by all the usual EU rules.

If commercially used with a trailer over a certain weight 1020kgs (?) then it comes into operator licensing regulation unless I’m mistaken…

If the trailer’s unladen weight is over 1020kg then you need an O-Licence. Under that and you don’t.
