Axminster transport

Great Cenis pics Dean, the top three were obviously taken in recent years, not a wagon in sight…
As has been said, great memories of that route, though sometimes challenging as Baldrick said…

Well Dennis,Tony,Baldrick, would seem that old Cliff is slacking a bit on here… , i reckon hes on the lash in one of those rouiters !!

This should bring back some memories.I really miss these…(Click on pages to enlarge for reading.)

Heres a new one.

Your turn next Tony.

Re ^^^: some of the Routiers were run by Algerians (probably still are), and were often very good. Two that spring to mind were Anais, just north of Angouleme on the RN10 and Au Bout du Monde at Amfreville-la-mi-voie, on the RN15 south of Rouen. Robert

Cliff luxton:
We were so lucky doing the job when we did we would ship from Calais into Dover quite often to spend the weekend in Dover, with other drivers on fridge work.Cadwalader, Christian Salvesen, Fransen, Sparks,Permatrans, Central Road, Forsey ,Kelly Freight, Leggitts, Frigoscandia, Alderson, just to mention a few. No charge for parking for the weekend and good company to go to the pub with. Then you hear what is happening in Calais today I for one am pleased I’m not there, but I feel for the guy’s that have to put up with the idiots that are putting the drivers in great danger. It is long overdue that our government did something to help drivers and hauliers.

Some great names mentioned here.

Well done Dean for keeping us going lovely pics of the Mont Cenis and new pics of the lorries ,I’m at home now so not on the lash in a routiers as much as I would like to be, spent many a happy time in the Algerians north of Auxerre the Cous Cous in there was second to none. A lot of drivers that shipped through Poole in the early day’s will remember the stuff served up for dinner that was supposed to be Cous Cous,it bore no resemblance to the real thing. I think the restaurant in question burnt down a few years ago if my memory serves me right. If my memory was better I would be able to reel of the drivers names from all those companies great times indeed.
At home looking over the bay.

Happy days indeed Cliff, really miss the routiers !

Nice line up.

This pic was posted by Robert, but had writing on it,so this one is clearer.

Cliff sent you a PM.

Called into the Quaterdeck this afternoon ,but was told that the proprietor was having a day off due to a problem with his nose.

This was probably a regular run for you Cliff back in the day ! I can remember George on Swains.

Click twice on the pages to magnify for reading.

Swains had an office in Cherbourg like Axminster and Atkins.

this was seen in the daf museum Eindhoven during our trip over with the old Bedford,

Thanks again Dean, Geoff, Nigel, and Hotel Magnum. We did a lot of work into Rungis back in the day loading from various abattoirs, Chard Meat, Hatherleigh , North Devon Meat, Cogan, Jarretts, Duggins, Cobdens, just to mention a few it was very unusual to deliver a full load to one drop they would normally send you of somewhere else in France with half a load sometimes taking most of your load off then reloading you to go elsewhere, could be Le Man’s ,Marseille, Nice,Surgeres there was no end to the surprises you would get.
I once went to the Daf factory in Eindhoven with the T.reg Daf I had to have the engine set up properly as it wasn’t going well when we had it new it did go well after that visit.

a F88 !

I used to have a card holder in the lorry full of the routiers cards with them marked on an old map book and
the page number written on the back of the card so you could find them easy.Used to work well, and the one
thing i always found was that they were so consistent. I dont remember ever having a bad meal at one.

Found this picture of the F89 ,i assume its in Cherbourg again where the colour pics were take, found it on a
French site.

That is a great model Dean have not seen that before wonder who made it. There were some lovely restaurant routiers in France unfortunately with all the motoways built a lot of them have closed but the ones with easy access from a junction on the motorway are still going. Haven’t seen that picture of the 89 before it was a iconic lorry with out a doubt.

This model was made by my good pal Clive Davis,he was an owner driver for nearly 35 years and owns the restored F88 of R.T.Keedwells.He is a keen modeller and has many models but most reside in his garage and not on display…this one though is in prime position in his “hobby” room.
Cheers Bubbs

Thanks for that Bubbleman does he take them to any shows?, I am hoping to go to Wessex this weekend would he be there.
