Axminster transport

Thanks for that Geoff still thinking on it .
Dibbs I think I’m right in saying that Males might have pulled Axminster trailers abroad a few times, but they did some work for Pattemores with the tankers into Europe.

One of CATS.

I guess the best job we had was frozen beef from Chard to Athens. It was before superfast ferries I might spell this wrong they were called Karregeorgis 36 hours Ancona to Patras lovely old ships you had to drive in the side and turn inside the ship on most of them.Mediterranean Sky,
Mediterranean Sun.are 2 names I remember.
There were 2 English girls worked in the casino on the ferry ,I arrived in Ancona one Saturday morning ready for the night ferry always very busy.
The was a English naval ship tied alongside were we parked the trucks I asked one of the crew if I could go on board for a drink during the day no was the reply, when I went to the bar later the girls from the casino on the ferry were there, we’re going on the navy ship for a drink at lunch time Cliff they told me I’m coming with you I said .Well the crew did make us Welcome and we spent quite a few hours in the officers mess drinking .I was very late for the ferry but just about made it.

In 1976 I was silly enough to loose my licence for 1 year Peter was good enough to give me a job in the office ,where I was lucky to work alongside Ken Baulch who was Peter’s cousin and our transport manager and a very good one at that. Ken could always see the funny side of things and was really good to work with.Unfortunately he died a few years ago R.I.P Ken.

We are lucky to be able to look back on all these enjoyable day’s

One more to get us back on the front page.

This was the first new lorry I ever drove. And didn’t they look good.

All went downhill after that old mate! And Tony’s now retired, bless him! Wouldn’t mind spending another winter’s afternoon in Tangier supping vodka with the old boy in his cab, waiting for a backload and watching the rain-washed mud clag up the local F88 shunters as they hauled Spanish traction down into the docks, to the wail of a call to prayer. Hey ho (it’ll never, ever leave you, Steve: no good fighting it!!). Robert

Not bad for a little site 20000 views hope we can keep it going.
