Does anyone remember this from the 80’s? I’ve googled but it didn’t bring anything up.

It was Bedford and AWD who developed the Multidrive System, originally for the military, basically an artic unit with another propshaft attached to differentials on the trailer.
Not only AWD Bedfords, Foden, Scammell and Sudden Accident were used on tipper & tanker work.
Cheers Malc! So did it see any service or did it not get past the developement stage?

No there were a few about I remember. I think AWD only failed because they were just crap lorries, and did DAF get the military contracts about that time?
This is the other end of the tanker outfit
I spent some time working with Multidrive on a military project at the same time as the Fodens came back from Bosnia (I think) Generally they performed well but heard tales of the treatment dished out by squadies not helping the reliability. There was one story about one been driven off the edge of a vertical drop of 20ft that did a lot of damage but was still mobile
Theres a lot written about David Brown and his companies on earthmover forums, his designs are still around today,a brilliant engineer who died in a freak car accident a couple of years ago. He owned several companies including AWD/Multidrive and Bedford before it disappeared
Hiya …Colas roads ran quite a few multi drive tanks. when colas was spraying tar for coating roads
they had contracts for steep Scotish and Devon areas. the wagons needed to go very slow uphill
the tar would run to the back of the tank taking weight off the drive axle, the best way out was to
use mulit drive outfits… there are some of these outfits at the Rowly Regis Depot.

Potteries lads will remember KETTLES having a few AWD Multidrives, they were used a lot for muckshifting on the A50 contract from Meir to the D road in the '90’s.

think this one ended up with clifford jones timber from ruthin fitted with crane and bolster body
I can remember this being featured on “Tomorrows World” .
I had the chance to visit the factory at stockton many years ago,i met david brown and was shown around the factory.there was a few artics there a scammell, bedford tl which had problems and i was told if itwas right i could have had a go in it also there was a pegaso troner waiting to be converted. The main thing i noticed was the thickness on the prop of the scammell. There was a 6x2 roadtrain built for a haulier and was featured in trucking intrnational some years ago and cpp produced a video called top tipper trio, which featured maguires volvo and a foden eight wheeler and the scammell multidrive.
thia video is well worth the watch
Notice the lack of landing legs on the latest picture in my post!
They were not designed for quick trailer swaps but would stay together like a Shawnee Pool or a Moxy. In fact looking at them I can see where his idea came from now. The SP trailer put the drawbar weight through the tractor wheels and the early Moxy had hydraulic drive on the trailer wheels.

Yes I remember them, they were Leyland/Scammell tractor units.
Here’s the only picture of the Scammell version I can find:
I remember seeing a tipper reguarly in Nantwich years ago and a drilling / piling outfit being repaired at a commercial garage next to Forresters in Whixall about 7/8 years ago
Does anybody remember 36DON Don Bushs Scammell Multidrive that used to work out of the quarries of Somerset , It was all airbrushed to,

Yeah I can remember seeing that around.
There were a couple of Leyland Roadtrain tankers with this set up for sale on a military site recently, and going cheap ! I
They were very low mileage and looked in excellent condition, ideal for shows and rallies, as they’re so unusual.
For civilian use, they must have dropped the payload some what !!
Heres a colas one Scammell T45 Roadtrain 6x2 | What's so unusual about this on… | Flickr
Hiya…your not going to get stuck with that Colas outfit are you. double drive Albion backend
pushing the scammel drive axel.i posted before the idea of a driveing trailer was steep uphill
spraying all the weight run to the back of the tank. this caursed the unit to lose traction.
but not with this outfit.
